To explain the working mechanisms of an antifouling paint we will here use the well-known tributyltin (TBT)-based paint. Through the years, improved paints have been developed because of competition from environmental and consumer activists. The objective of improving overall quality and reducing emissions of VOCs has led to a wider selection of paint types. The user, therefore, must select a coating type that meets the cost of required application, equipment, energy costs for using, pollution and waste collection expenses, and application and cured performance requirements of the coating. [Pg.1298]

Although there are many varieties of paint in use, Haynie (6) has chosen to simplify them into two types according to the composition of the extender, or thickener. Of the two paint types, the more pollutant-resistant contains silicate extenders while older, carbonate extender paints are less pollutant-resistant. Silicate extender paints have become dominant in the exterior paint market only in the last decade, accounting for most (probably over 80 percent) of current sales. Break-in tools used to gain access to premises may well carry traces of paint that have abraded from painted surfaces at the point of entry. Commonly encountered household paint types include polyvinyl acetate (PVA), acrylics, alkyd enamels, epoxies, and chlorinated rubbers. Many paint-type encapsulants do not allow tint changes after they leave the factory, and cannot offer dark colors, because the extra pigments can undermine the chemical shielding properties of the encapsulants, which have twice or more the solid content as even the best paints.
