Paint types chlorinated rubber

General paint coating systems are a combination of oil-type rust preventative primer and long oil alkyd resin paint or chlorinated rubber paint (intermediate and overcoats) with a total thickness of less than 150 p,m. These are applied in relatively mild atmospheres such as rural, mountain, and city. 

Lifting may also occur if a paint containing strong solvents (xylol or solvent naphtha, not to mention such active solvents as esters and ketones) is applied (not necessarily by brushing) over a paint which is not resistant to them. The older an oxidising paint film becomes, the more solvent-resistant it will be. Short-oil media and pigment-rich paints are not so prone to lifting. This type of failure is not restricted to oil-base materials it can, for example, also occur with chlorinated rubber paints. 

Chlorinated rubber is often used in combination with medium oil drying-type alkyds. The principal applications are highway traffic paint, concrete floor, and swimming pool paints. 

There are numerous types of paint employed in the protection of steel and they are designed to meet the conditions imposed by the environment in which they are expected to function. For steel exposed to the atmosphere, the most common type of paint system is based on alkyl resin and this may be mixed with other types or may itself be chemically modified for a specific purpose, e.g. vinyl toluenated or styrenated to give rapid drying. Other generic types are chlorinated rubber, vinyl, acrylic, epoxy, and polyurethane. All have particular attributes and limitations and selection is usually a matter of discussion between user and supplier. 

Chlorinated rubber is often used in combination with medium-oil drying type alkyds. The alkyd gives better toughness, flexibility, adhesion, and durability, and the chlorinated rubber contributes to faster dry and better resistance to water and chemicals. The major applications are highway traffic paint, concrete floor, and swimming pool paints. 

Break-in tools used to gain access to premises may well carry traces of paint that have abraded from painted surfaces at the point of entry. Commonly encountered household paint types include polyvinyl acetate (PVA), acrylics, alkyd enamels, epoxies, and chlorinated rubbers. Py-GC can distinguish between these different classes (Figure 8.4).

Newer types of high-performance paints used on ship exteriors include those based on epoxy resins, polyurethane resins, vinyl resins (also vinyl/ alkyd or vinyl/acrylic blends) or chlorinated rubber. Epoxies and polyurethanes are chemically-curing types and present curing problems at low temperatures, whilst the overcoating intervals are critical for best adhesion... 

Biphenol derivatives are quite resistant to hydrolysis and oxidation and have excellent electrical characteristics. The more highly chlorinated types are flame resistant and impart this quality to resins with which they are used. They are of special interest in chlorinated rubber, paints, and PVC electrical compositions.

Rural and mountain atmospheres. These atmospheres are usually mild. An oil-type rust preventative primer and phthalic acid resin paint overcoat is used. Chlorinated rubber and epoxy paints are used in areas having high humidity and heavy snowfalls. 

The most common binders used are chlorinated rubber, vinyls, silicones and urethanes. They are widely used paints, successfully applied under a wide range of conditions. They also belong to the convertible type of coating.
