This heading covers such a large number of products and applications that it is difficult to give a complete inventory. For this reason the standards organizations, starting with ISO (International Organization for Standardization ), have published a series of standards to classify these products. 

At the international level, the official organization is the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and its counterpart for the electrical industries, the lEC (International Electrotechnical Commission).

Quality assurance (QA) is a generic term for all activities required to maintain quality in analytical results. These include laboratory management structures and sample documentation procedures, as well as the more practical sample preparation and analysis requirements (as described above). The ISO (International Organization for Standardization) develops standards across a wide range of areas, from screw threads to banking cards. The majority of ISO standards are specific to certain areas they are documented agreements containing technical specifications or precise criteria to be used... 

ISO International Organization for Standardization. An international standards-writing body headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, composed of national standards associations from some 55 countries. All member countries are given equal status and are entitled to one vote regardless of size or economic development. Technical work is carried on in committees. 

Recent initiatives by global organizations such as ISO (International Organization for Standardization, www.iso.org) and ICH (International Conference on Harmonization, www.ich.org) are attempting to bring consistency in concept and standardization in definition to the QMS. In 2004, the Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-Operation Scheme (PIC/S, www.picscheme.org) issued its recommendation on Quality System Requirements for Pharmaceutical Inspectorates. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiated inspection surveillance approaches based upon QMS organization and is another source of definition and interpretation. 

Although the focus of the book is on the relevant ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) test methods with the numbers given, where possible the corresponding ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and BS (British Standards Institution) test method numbers are also presented. This chapter will look at the composition of a number of popular aromatherapy materials. There is a lot of published data describing chemical compositions.
