Phase-dependent coherence and interference can be induced in a multi-level atomic system coupled by multiple laser fields. Two simple examples are presented here, a three-level A-type system coupled by four laser fields and a four-level double A-type system coupled also by four laser fields. The four laser fields induce the coherent nonlinear optical processes and open multiple transitions channels. The quantum interference among the multiple channels depends on the relative phase difference of the laser fields. Simple experiments show that constructive or destructive interference associated with multiple two-photon Raman channels in the two coherently coupled systems can be controlled by the relative phase of the laser fields. Rich spectral features exhibiting multiple transparency windows and absorption peaks are observed. The multicolor EIT-type system may be useful for a variety of application in coherent nonlinear optics and quantum optics such as manipulation of group velocities of multicolor, multiple light pulses, for optical switching at ultra-low light intensities, for precision spectroscopic measurements, and for phase control of the quantum state manipulation and quantum memory. 

The advent of functional foods and nutraceuticals on the market has blurred the distinction between pharma and nutrition [1]. Obviously, the concept of foods promoting health is not new. In 400 b.c., Hippocrates already sentenced Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food [2], and in the countries of the far East, influenced by Chinese culture, foods such as glutinous rice, wheat, sesame, jujube, gingiber, or leek were included in Chinese medicine books for their traditional use for chronic diseases [3]. Nowadays, the development of functional foods is one of the most intensive areas of food product development worldwide, opening multiple challenges for countries with a vast biodiversity and historical use of plant extracts [4]. 

The effect of rifampicin on the steady-state pharmacokinetics of linezolid has also been evaluated in an open, multiple-dose, crossover study in 16 healthy subjects [168 J. Rifampicin reduced the AUC of linezolid by 32% and the C ax by 21%, but the t ax and apparent volume of distribution were unaffected. The apparent oral clearance was increased and the half-life shortened. Parallel studies in human hepatocytes showed that rifampicin increased the metabolism of linezolid by about 50% compared with a 19- to 40-fold increase in testosterone metabolism. These increases were about 50% inhibited by ketoconazole. Modelling of these data using Simcyp suggested that rifampicin-induc-ible drug metabolizing enzymes play a very minor role in linezolid clearance.

Although not shown in Fig. 2, we have implemented some additional usability features, such as the ability to open multiple views simultaneously in separate tabs, i.e., multiple canvases. The end-user can save changes either to the argument structures. 

Abstract The electrostatic Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technique allows the fabrication of polyelectrolyte multilayers that can be considered as a special type of interpolyelectrolyte complexes supported by a template (fluid or soUd). The main characteristic that confers special interest to these interpolyelectrolyte complexes is the simplicity and versatility of the method used for their fabrication, although in some cases this may hide the complex influence of the different physico-chemical variables. The possibility to change ionic strength, pH, temperature, etc. and/or the composition makes possible to control the properties and structure of these systems. Furthermore, the compositional and structural richness of these systems opens multiple possibilities for the fabrication of nano-structured materials with tailored properties for numerous applications (from optical to nanomedical devices). This chapter deal with the physico-chemical background of the fabrication of supramolecular films by the LbL method as well as the key properties that should be managed in order to obtain functional materials following this approach.

The most general methods for the syntheses of 1,2-difunctional molecules are based on the oxidation of carbon-carbon multiple bonds (p. 117) and the opening of oxiranes by hetero atoms (p. 123fl.). There exist, however, also a few useful reactions in which an a - and a d -synthon or two r -synthons are combined. The classical polar reaction is the addition of cyanide anion to carbonyl groups, which leads to a-hydroxynitriles (cyanohydrins). It is used, for example, in Strecker s synthesis of amino acids and in the homologization of monosaccharides. The ff-hydroxy group of a nitrile can be easily substituted by various nucleophiles, the nitrile can be solvolyzed or reduced. Therefore a large variety of terminal difunctional molecules with one additional carbon atom can be made. Equally versatile are a-methylsulfinyl ketones (H.G. Hauthal, 1971 T. Durst, 1979 O. DeLucchi, 1991), which are available from acid chlorides or esters and the dimsyl anion. Carbanions of these compounds can also be used for the synthesis of 1,4-dicarbonyl compounds (p. 65f.). 

If you specify a multiplicity of one (singlet), then you would most often choose the RHFmethod, unless the reactions result in bond breaking (see page 46). If the selected multiplicity is greater than one, then the system is open-shell and the usual choice is the UHF method, which uses different orbitals for electrons with different spins. 

Horizontal rotary machines employ multiple molds in a horizontal plane on a rotary turret. As each mold approaches the extmder die exit, it opens to accept the parison and then closes. The parison is then blown into the bottle shape. The extmder must extmde on an intermittent basis or be intermittently withdrawn to provide a parison for each passing mold. 

Many filters in chemical process units are either changed very rarely or are back-flushed automatically so there is hardly any exposure. Some filters, however, require frequent manual changing or cleaning and significant exposure may occur unless operators foUow the proper procedure. The filter container should be drained of any toxic material and then flushed and purged as needed so that when it is opened there is only minimal exposure. Zero exposure is difficult to achieve in situations where a disposable paper filter cartridge may retain and slowly release a material that cannot be removed by multiple flushes and purges.
