Main Characteristics

Polymers of this group have their amorphous structure in common. In contrast to the usual definition of amorphous, meaning structureless, many amorphous polymers reveal a more or less detectable microstructure, from weak domainlike or globular structures up to a pronounced morphology. Therefore, a second definition is often used that amorphous polymers do not exhibit any crystalline structure in X-ray or electron scattering experiments. According to this definition, very different materials belong to the family of amorphous polymers  [Pg.71]

The amorphous brittle and ductile homopolymers are illustrated in Section 1.2 and the amorphous copolymers in Section 1.3. The other polymers form separate groups and are illustrated in Chapter 3 (block copolymers). Chapter 4 (polymer blends). Chapter 5 (rubber-toughened polymers). Chapter 6 (particle-filled micro-and nanocomposites), and Chapter 7 (fiber-reinforced polymers). [Pg.71]

This network model was developed for PS with its relatively large entanglement distance d of about 10 nm and average mesh diameter D (Z) = d Vi = 1.4d) of about 14 nm. However, it can also be used for other amorphous polymers with smaller entanglement molecular weights and distances. These density fluctuations in a domain-like form are the weakest supramolecular structures in amorphous polymers. Therefore, the typical amorphous polymers, often used as models of an amorphous material, are also not really structureless. In the literature, there are some other results relating to the structures of amorphous polymers, ranging [Pg.72]

In the group of the single-phase amorphous polymers, PVC is an exception with a pronounced morphology with domains (about 100 nm) and so-called primary particles (about 1 pm) that are clearly visible in the electron microscope [11], The interfaces between these structural details are preferential sites for chemical staining, highlighting the morphology of PVC (see Fig. 1.40). [Pg.73]

With a few exceptions reservoir rocks are sediments. The two main categories are siliciclastic rocks, usually referred to as elastics or sandstones , and carbonate rocks. Most reservoirs in the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea are contained in a clastic depositional environment many of the giant fields of the Middle East are contained in carbonate rocks. Before looking at the significance of depositional environments for the production process let us investigate some of the main characteristics of both categories. [Pg.76]

The main characteristics of the method, developed in our group for reaction classification arc 1) the representation of a reaction by physicochemical values calculated for the bonds being broken and made during the reaction, and 2 use of the unsupervised learning method of a self-organi2ing neural network for the perception of similarity of chemical reactions [3, 4],... [Pg.545]

Commercial Extractors. Extractors can be classified according to the methods appHed for interdispersing the phases and producing the countercurrent flow pattern. Eigure 11 summarizes the classification of the principal types of commercial extractors Table 3 summarizes the main characteristics. [Pg.72]

The concentration of most metals in the earth s cmst is very low, and even for abundant elements such as aluminum and iron, extraction from common rock is not economically feasible. An ore is a metallic deposit from which the metal can be economically extracted. The amount of valuable metal in the ore is the tenor, or ore grade, usually given as the wt % of metal or oxide. Eor precious metals, the tenor is given in grams per metric ton or troy ounces per avoirdupois short ton (2000 pounds). The tenor and the type of metallic compounds are the main characteristics of an ore. The economic feasibihty of ore processing, however, depends also on the nature, location, and size of the deposit the availabihty and cost of a suitable extraction process and the market price of the metal. [Pg.162]

Solvent Influence. Solvent nature has been found to influence absorption spectra, but fluorescence is substantiaHy less sensitive (9,58). Sensitivity to solvent media is one of the main characteristics of unsymmetrical dyes, especiaHy the merocyanines (59). Some dyes manifest positive solvatochromic effects (60) the band maximum is bathochromicaHy shifted as solvent polarity increases. Other dyes, eg, highly unsymmetrical ones, exhibit negative solvatochromicity, and the absorption band is blue-shifted on passing from nonpolar to highly polar solvent (59). In addition, solvents can lead to changes in intensity and shape of spectral bands (58). [Pg.494]

The main characteristic properties of asbestos fibers that can be exploited in industrial appHcations (8) are their thermal, electrical, and sound insulation nonflammabiUty matrix reinforcement (cement, plastic, and resins) adsorption capacity (filtration, Hquid sterilization) wear and friction properties (friction materials) and chemical inertia (except in acids). These properties have led to several main classes of industrial products or appHcations... [Pg.354]

The main characteristics and physical properties of the chlorophenols are brought together in Table 1. With the exception of o-chlorophenol, they are all sohds at room temperature. The refractive indexes of the monochlorophenols, C H CIO, are as follows ortho, 1.5524 meta, 1.5565 para, 1.5579. The piC values of chlorophenols depend on the number and the position of the substituents. [Pg.78]

Certain polymers have come to be considered standard building blocks of the polyblends. For example, impact strength may be improved by using polycarbonate, ABS and polyurethanes. Heat resistance is improved by using polyphenylene oxide, polysulphone, PVC, polyester (PET and PBT) and acrylic. Barrier properties are improved by using plastics such as ethylene vinyl alchol (EVA). Some modem plastic alloys and their main characteristics are given in Table 1.2. [Pg.11]

The analysis of the main properties of aqueous solutions of polyacrylamide and copolymers of acrylamide has been reviewed [4,5]. The main characteristics of aqueous solutions of polyacrylamide is viscosity. The viscosity of aqueous solutions increases with concentration and molecular weight of polyacrylamide and decreases with increasing temperature. The relationship between the intrinsic viscosity [q]) in cmVg and the molecular weight for polyacrylamide follows the Mark-Houwink equations ... [Pg.62]

The effect is best illustrated by a numerical example (Table 31.4). Let us take the case of hard and alkaline deep well water such as that found to the north of London, whose main characteristics are shown in the first column of Table 31.4. The second column shows its quality after de-alkalization has removed nine-tenths of the temporary hardness and converted it into CO2 gas. This is removed from the water by stripping it with air in a packed degassing column, and the product then softened in the third stage to yield the product shown in the third column. [Pg.481]

The main characteristic of attack by halogens at elevated temperatures is that most reaction products are volatile compared with the solid products that form in all cases considered hitherto in this chapter. Thus, in cases where metals are exposed to pure halogen gases large mass losses are usually reported with very little external scale formation. Li and Rapp " showed that internal chloridation occurred when nickel-chromium alloys were exposed to Ni + NiClj powders at 700-900°C. However, where oxide scales can also form, as in combustion gases, the oxide layer was usually highly... [Pg.1081]

Everything in Swarm is an object with three main characteristics Name, Data and Rules. An object s Name consists of an ID that is used to send messages to the object, a type and a module name. An object s Data consists of whatever local data (i.e. internal state variables) the user wants an agent to possess. The Rules are functions to handle any messages that are sent to the object. The basic unit of Swarm is a swarm a collection of objects with a schedule of event over those objects. Swarm also supplies the user with an interface and analysis tools. [Pg.569]

Attempts to adopt the process of direct reduction of K2TaF7 by sodium for the production of capacitor-grade powders are continuing in the direction of improving both the reduction process and the chemical leaching efficiency. Purushotham et al. [585] analyzed the main characteristics of the powder produced by direct reduction of the diluted melt. It was reported that the powder contained higher levels of impurities, but the authors nevertheless believe that the impurity levels can be reduced to acceptable limits. [Pg.330]
