Filter cartridges

Many filters in chemical process units are either changed very rarely or are back-flushed automatically so there is hardly any exposure. Some filters, however, require frequent manual changing or cleaning and significant exposure may occur unless operators foUow the proper procedure. The filter container should be drained of any toxic material and then flushed and purged as needed so that when it is opened there is only minimal exposure. Zero exposure is difficult to achieve in situations where a disposable paper filter cartridge may retain and slowly release a material that cannot be removed by multiple flushes and purges. 

Succinic acid and anhydride should be handled with mbber or plastic gloves safety goggles and a dust filter are recommended when handling the products in powder form. A full-face gas mask with a type A (brown) filter cartridge should be worn when handling molten products.

Water is often deionized using an ion exchange (Section 11.6) cartridge to remove hardness minerals. Such deionization of water is often done in conjunction with distillation, such that the water is both deionized and distilled prior to use. Also, if the water is contaminated with organics, or other low boiling substances, a charcoal filter cartridge is often used as well. 

The factor C and the exponent y must be determined by experiments with pilot settlers. These terms combine all the unknown parameters. The cross-sectional area, S, of the settler should be chosen in such a way that the superficial velocity, of the dispersed phase does not exceed 5-9mms . Often aids for coalescing (e.g., packages of inclined plates or filter cartridges made of metal or plastic) (Fig. 9.23) are used. There are several ways of predetermining coalescence [31-33]. Furthermore, in special cases electrical fields and centrifuges are used to support coalescence [34]. 

Sample Preparation. Calibration standards and test solutes were injected ai dilute solutions in the eluent. Polystyrene standards were 0.03 (w/v). Styrene, ODCB and normal hydrocarbons were 0.15 (w/v), except for dodecane and tridecane (0.65 ). Samples involving more complex matrices were prepared by crushing (if necessary), dissolving a weighed amount in the eluent, and filtering through a 0.45 Millex-SR filter cartridge (Millipore, Bedford, ma). 

Some pumps have easily exchangeable filter cartridges that not only hold back oil mist, but clean the circulating pump oil. Whenever the amount of water vapor present is greater than the water vapor tolerance of the pump, a condenser should always be installed between the vessel and the pump. Filters, sterilizable-in-place in 316L stainless steel housings accommodate various-brand filter cartridges.
