On standing, gelatinous aluminium hydroxide, which may initially have even more water occluded than indicated above, is converted into a form insoluble in both acids and alkalis, which is probably a hydrated form of the oxide AI2O3. Both forms, however, have strong adsorptive power and will adsorb dyes, a property long used by the textile trade to dye rayon. The cloth is first impregnated with an aluminium salt (for example sulphate or acetate) when addition of a little alkali, such as sodium carbonate, causes aluminium hydroxide to deposit in the pores of the material. The presence of this aluminium hydroxide in the cloth helps the dye to bite by ad sorbing it—hence the name mordant (Latin mordere = to bite) dye process. [Pg.151]

Decolorisation by Animal Charcoal. It sometimes hap pens (particularly with aromatic and heterocyclic compounds) that a crude product may contain a coloured impurity, which on recrystallisation dissolves in the boiling solvent, but is then partly occluded by crystals as they form and grow in the cooling solution. Sometimes a very tenacious occlusion may thus occur, and repeated and very wasteful recrystallisation may be necessary to eliminate the impurity. Moreover, the amount of the impurity present may be so small that the melting-point and analytical values of the compound are not sensibly affected, yet the appearance of the sample is ruined. Such impurities can usually be readily removed by boiling the substance in solution with a small quantity of finely powdered animal charcoal for a short time, and then filtering the solution while hot. The animal charcoal adsorbs the coloured impurity, and the filtrate is usually almost free from extraneous colour and deposits therefore pure crystals. This decolorisation by animal charcoal occurs most readily in aqueous solution, but can be performed in almost any organic solvent. Care should be taken not to use an excessive quantity... [Pg.21]

When these benzoyl compounds separate in the course of the Schotten-Baumann reaction, they frequently occlude traces of unchanged benzoyl chloride, which thus escapes hydrolysis by the alkali it is advantageous there fore to recrystallise the benzoyl compounds whenever possible from ethanol or methylated spirit, since these solvents will esterify the unchanged chloride and so remove the latter from the recrystallised material. [Pg.244]

Iron is a relatively abundant element in the universe. It is found in the sun and many types of stars in considerable quantity. Its nuclei are very stable. Iron is a principal component of a meteorite class known as siderites and is a minor constituent of the other two meteorite classes. The core of the earth — 2150 miles in radius — is thought to be largely composed of iron with about 10 percent occluded hydrogen. Occlusions, which are a second type of coprecipitated impurity, occur when physically adsorbed interfering ions become trapped within the growing precipitate. Occlusions form in two ways. The most common mechanism occurs when physically adsorbed ions are surrounded by additional precipitate before they can be desorbed or displaced (see Figure 8.4a). In this case the precipitate s mass is always greater than expected. Occlusions also form when rapid precipitation traps a pocket of solution within the growing precipitate (Figure 8.4b). Since the trapped solution contains dissolved solids, the precipitate s mass normally increases. The mass of the precipitate may be less than expected, however, if the occluded material consists primarily of the analyte in a lower-molecular-weight form from that of the precipitate. [Pg.239]

Occlusions are minimized by maintaining the precipitate in equilibrium with its supernatant solution for an extended time. This process is called digestion and may be carried out at room temperature or at an elevated temperature. During digestion, the dynamic nature of the solubility-precipitation equilibrium, in which the precipitate dissolves and re-forms, ensures that occluded material is eventually exposed to the supernatant solution. Since the rate of dissolution and reprecipitation are slow, the chance of forming new occlusions is minimal. [Pg.239]

Urea has the remarkable property of forming crystalline complexes or adducts with straight-chain organic compounds. These crystalline complexes consist of a hoUow channel, formed by the crystallized urea molecules, in which the hydrocarbon is completely occluded. Such compounds are known as clathrates. The type of hydrocarbon occluded, on the basis of its chain length, is determined by the temperature at which the clathrate is formed. This property of urea clathrates is widely used in the petroleum-refining industry for the production of jet aviation fuels (see Aviation and other gas-TURBINE fuels) and for dewaxing of lubricant oils (see also Petroleum, refinery processes). The clathrates are broken down by simply dissolving urea in water or in alcohol. [Pg.310]

In addition to graft copolymer attached to the mbber particle surface, the formation of styrene—acrylonitrile copolymer occluded within the mbber particle may occur. The most common hydrophobic adsorbents are activated carbon and siUcahte. The latter is of particular interest since the affinity for water is very low indeed the heat of adsorption is even smaller than the latent heat of vaporization (3). It seems clear that the channel stmcture of siUcahte must inhibit the hydrogen bonding between occluded water molecules, thus enhancing the hydrophobic nature of the adsorbent. Pentaeiythritol Tetranitrate. Specification-grade pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN) can be stored up to 18 months at 65°C without significant deterioration. However, many materials have been found to be incompatible with PETN and the presence of as Htfle as 0.01% occluded acid or alkah greatly accelerates decomposition. The decomposition of PETN is autocatalytic with reported kinetic constants oi E = 196.6 kJ/mol (47 kcal/mol) and Z = 6.31 x 10 . In an alternative procedure (84), the electrolyte is pumped through the cells at such a rate that the outlet concentration is 50 g/L MnSO and 67 g/L H2SO4. Impurities in cmde metal can occur as other metals or nonmetals, either dissolved or in some occluded form. Normally, impurities are detrimental, making the metal less useful and less valuable. Sometimes, as in the case of copper, extremely small impurity concentrations, eg, arsenic, can impart a harmful effect on a given physical property, eg, electrical conductivity. On the other hand, impurities may have commercial value. For example, gold, silver, platinum, and palladium, associated with copper, each has value. Viscosity. Low Soda Hydroxide. Tlie Na20 content of nomial Bayer hydroxide is around 0.2—0.4%, 0.1% of wliich can be removed by thorough wasliing. Tlie remaining soda is trapped within the hydroxide crystal. Experience shows that the occluded soda content is reduced when cry staUization is carried out under low aluniina-supersaturation conditions and at relatively higher temperatures (80—95°C).
