The Scientific World at http //www.thescientihcworld.com/ offers literature searching through SciBase, a collection of databases of scientific, technical, and medical research literature. SciBase currently covers more than 19 million documents published since 1965 in more than 30,000 journals. SciBase content is derived from databases created by the National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE), the British Library, BIOSIS, and PASCAL, as well as CAB ABSTRACTS. Abstracts are sometimes available free and individual articles are available for purchase. [Pg.153]

This information may be gleaned from specialized ADR resources, texts, and other tertiary sources, including the FDA-approved product label. However, this information must often be augmented using additional data from secondary sources. At minimum, this should include searches of the bibliographic databases from the National Library of Medicine (Medline and Toxnet) and Excerpta Medica (Embase). [Pg.399]

MEDLINE. Washington, DC National Library of Medicine. MEDLINE is a premier clinical literature database, providing abstracted information from over 4800 journals. MEDLINE covers the preclinical sciences, biomedicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and the healthcare system. The most effective way to find device information is to use appropriate Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and subheadings. The relevant instrument-related MeSH terms are Surgical Equipment, with the narrower term Surgical Instruments. [Pg.294]

Typical bibliographic databases are the CA File of Chemical Abstracts Service CAS) or Medline of the US National Library of Medicine. Most electronic journals provide articles as full-text files, e.g., the Journal of the American Chemical Society ( ACS). [Pg.238]

Medline. The Medline data base, which comes from the National Library of Medicine, is a superb, indispensable reference library that is particularly strong in its wide coverage of research activities in the biomedical literature. It also encompasses the areas of clinical medicine, health policy, and health care services. Each year, over 300,000 articles are reviewed and indexed into the data base. The full bibliographic citations of these articles, usually including the abstract of the published work, are available from numerous vendors in CD-ROM format and are usually updated on a monthly basis. [Pg.108]

Research articles of interest to biochemists may appear in many types of research journals. Research libraries do not have the funds necessary to subscribe to every journal, nor do scientists have the time to survey every current journal copy for articles of interest. Two publications that help scientists to keep up with published articles are Chemical Titles (published every 2 weeks by the American Chemical Society) and the weekly Current Contents available in hard copy and computer disks (published by the Institute of Science Information). The Life Science edition of Current Contents is the most useful for biochemists. The computer revolution has reached into the chemical and biochemical literature, and most college and university libraries now subscribe to computer bibliographic search services. One such service is STN International, the scientific and technical information network. This on-line system allows direct access to some of the world s largest scientific databases. The STN databases of most value to life scientists include BIOSIS Pre-views/RN (produced by Bio Sciences Information Service covers original research reports, reviews, and U.S. patents in biology and biomedicine), CA (produced by Chemical Abstracts service covers research reports in all areas of chemistry), MEDLINE, and MEDLARS (produced by the U.S. National Library of Medicine and Index Medicus, respectively cover all areas of biomedicine). These networks provide on-line service and their databases can be accessed from personal computers in the office, laboratory, or library. Some... [Pg.218]

The PubMed site (http //www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Entrez) is developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It has been developed in conjunction with publishers of biomedical literature as a search tool for accessing literature citations and linking to full-text journals at web sites of participating publishers. This site allows online access to the Medline database containing bibliographic citations and abstracts from journals dating back to 1966. [Pg.478]
