Medline

Typical bibliographic databases are the CA File of Chemical Abstracts Service CAS) or Medline of the US National Library of Medicine. Most electronic journals provide articles as full-text files, e.g., the Journal of the American Chemical Society ( ACS). [Pg.238]

Medline covers primarily biomedical literature, containing more than 13 million citations (October, 2002) of articles from more than 4600 journals published since 1958 [18]. The database covers basic biomedical research, clinical sciences, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, pre-clinical sciences, and life science. Medline, a subset of PubMed, is a bibliographic database produced by the US Nationcil Library of Medicine (NLM). The database is available free of charge via SciFinder Scholar or PubMed [19]. [Pg.241]

The U.S. government, a primary sponsor of scientific and technological developments that fostered the computer and communications technologies needed by the on-line database industry, also sponsored database development projects, information usage studies, and combined computer database development—usage projects. The successors of some of these projects continue to be prominent and include DIALOG, MEDLINE, BRS, LEXIS, and the Chemical Abstracts Registry System. [Pg.113]

Also databases of scientific literature (such as PUBMED, MEDLINE) provide additional functionality, e.g. they can search for similar articles based on word-usage analysis. Text recognition systems are being developed that automatically extract knowledge about protein function from the abstracts of scientific articles, notably on protein-protein interactions. [Pg.261]

A search of Medline, EMBASE and PsycLIT was conducted in August 2000, using the following terms Amisulpride, clozapine, olanzapine, risperidone, sertindole, zotepine, ziprasidone, economics, healthcare, costs. All manufacturers of atypical antipsychotic drugs were contacted in April 2000 and asked to supply primary reference data on their product, and all companies had complied with this request by August 2000. A further manual search was conducted of files and journals kept in the National Centre for Information on Psychotropics at the Maudsley Hospital. Reference sections from all retrieved papers were scrutinized for further relevant references. [Pg.38]

Information resources on dietary supplements are available on the Internet, via textbooks, and through Medline searches. The reliability and credibility of some resources is lacking. Pharmacists need to evaluate the information and to choose reputable sources. The following should be evaluated to determine whether the resource is reliable and credible [54]. [Pg.741]

All of the science disciplines contribute to the body of information and knowledge that is used by pharmaceutical researchers, educators, and practitioners. Questions and information needs that arise within a pharmaceutical specialty will not necessarily be met by the literature associated with that specialty [13]. Researchers and academics particularly need access to a broad range of science literature. English is widely used however, the biomedical literature is and has been truly international [13]. About 86% of the current MEDLINE database is English language even though only 52% of current cited articles were published in the United States [20]. [Pg.764]
