Dealing with public

The present review mainly deals with publications from 1989 to early 1996, with some key earlier references as background. The photochemistry of organosilicon compounds has been reviewed previously, most recently in a detailed article by Steinmetz in 19951. An earlier review was written by Brook in 19892, annual reviews have been published3 and much material including photochemical studies can be found in general reviews of organosilicon chemistry4-6. Other specialized reviews will be noted in the appropriate sections of the text.

I cannot see how this objection is justified. Whatever form of constitution we establish, the current degree of civilisation of the European nations means that there will never be more than a very few citizens who can deal with public affairs. Women would be no more forced to abandon their homes than labourers their ploughs or craftsmen their workshops. No woman in the richest classes is so busy with domestic affairs that we need worry about distracting her, and a serious task would distract her far less than the futile pastimes to which women are condemned by idleness and bad education.

Figure 1.5 provides just a sample of Center case studies dealing with public safety and welfare. The Center also sponsors conferences, addresses the ABET Readiness Committee call for a Guide to Ethics for Dummies, and provides sample student assignments, from freshman to senior level, on practical ethics for use by instructors.

Regulatory management is a three-step process. First, it is essential to understand the statutory requirements and the purpose of any applicable federal and state regulations. Second, one must develop the data base and scientific rationale necessary to demonstrate the safety of a product within the regulatory framework. Finally, one must have a proactive outreach program for dealing with public concerns.
