All of the science disciplines contribute to the body of information and knowledge that is used by pharmaceutical researchers, educators, and practitioners. Questions and information needs that arise within a pharmaceutical specialty will not necessarily be met by the literature associated with that specialty [13]. Researchers and academics particularly need access to a broad range of science literature. English is widely used however, the biomedical literature is and has been truly international [13]. About 86% of the current MEDLINE database is English language even though only 52% of current cited articles were published in the United States [20]. [Pg.764]

The PubMed site (http //www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Entrez) is developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM), located at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It has been developed in conjunction with publishers of biomedical literature as a search tool for accessing literature citations and linking to full-text journals at web sites of participating publishers. With the arrival of the World Wide Web and its ability to facilitate global communication came the opportunity to expand the services of the NLM. In 1997, the cumbersome methods of searching the MEDLINE database were replaced with user-friendlier search systems, namely Internet Grateful Med and PubMed. Moreover, searching via these resources was now free. These search systems fueled a 10-fold increase in the use of MEDLINE to 75 million searches annually. Today, more than 250 million MEDLINE searches are performed each year. MEDLINE is a bibliographic database that contains more than 11 million references to journal articles from 4300 national and international biomedical journals, covering the period from 1966 to the present.Types of journals indexed in MEDLINE include pharmacy, allied health, nursing, medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, pre-clinical science, and life science journals. Each week, nearly 8000 reference citations, created by the NLM and its partners, are added to the MEDLINE database. [Pg.580]

MEDLINE database, known as PubMed on the NLM platform, is available free worldwide, and is considered the premier source for searching the clinical medical literature back to 1966. Embase is the other key clinical database, produced by Elsevier and known for its international scope and exceptional coverage of the drug literature. [Pg.293]

Proteomics is a newly coined term that refers to the field of study of the proteome. The term was defined for the first time in 1994 as the PROTEin products of a genOME.
