Solvents for A-type inks are aUphatic hydrocarbons, for example, hexane, textile spidts, Apco Thinner, lactane, VM P (varnish makers and painters ) naphtha, and mineral spirits. Aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene and xylene are solvents for B-type inks. Generally, a blend of aUphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons is commonly used for this type of ink. [Pg.252]

Mineral spirits, a type of petroleum distillate popular for use in solvent-based house paints, consist mainly of aUphatic hydrocarbons with a trace of aromatics. This type of solvent finds use in oil- and alkyd-based house paints because of its good solvency with typical house paint binders and its relatively slow evaporation rate which imparts good bmshabiUty, open-time, and leveling. Other properties include lower odor, relatively lower cost, as well as safety and health hazard characteristics comparable to most other organic solvents. [Pg.541]

Many older finishes can be removed with single solvents or blends of petroleum solvents and oxygenates. Varnish can be removed with mineral spirits, shellac can be stripped with alcohols, and lacquers can be removed with blends of acetates and alcohols (lacquer thinners). The removal mechanism is one of dissolving the coating, then washing the surface or wiping away the finish. Anhydrous stannous chloride, a water-soluble white soHd, is the most economical source of stannous tin and is especially important in redox and plating reactions. The differences in composition between water-borne and solvent-bome air-drying paints necessitate change in driers and drier combinations. Since traditional driers are dissolved in mineral spirits, xylene, or other aUphatic/aromatic solvents, they are not readily dispersed in an aqueous system.
