Solvents in dry cleaning

Perchlor and trichlor are used as metal degreasing agents and as solvents in dry cleaning. Perchlor is also used as a cleaning and drying agent for electronic equipment and as a fumigant. 

Although many advances in the area of alternative solvents have originated in academia, many alternatives are already in use on an industrial scale. For example, supercritical carbon dioxide is used in coifee decaifeination and natural product extractions, as an alternative solvent in dry-cleaning and as a solvent in continuous flow hydrogenation reactions. An overview of these and some other industrial processes that use alternative solvents will be described in Chapter 10. 

USE Oil and fat solvent in dry cleaning fluids in degreasing. In insecticidal fumigant mixtures. Caution May be irritating to eyes, mucous membranes, and in high concns, narcotic. Has caused liver, kidney uecrosis in exptl animals. 

OTHER COMMENTS used as a solvent in dry cleaning industry used in the manufacture of aerosol sprays as a solvent for paints and varnishes used in metal cleaning and degreasing use as a solvent for printing inks and textile-printing industries useful in the manufacture of sprays for pesticides, herbicides, household cleaners, and silicone compounds. 

Use of Stoddard solvent in dry cleaning may result in the occupational exposure of workers in these establishments, either through inhalation or dermal exposure (Air Force 1989b). The use of Stoddard solvent (mineral spirits) in commercial paints may result in inhalation exposure, particularly if the paint is applied with a sprayer (Fidler et al. 1987), as well as dermal exposures if protective clothing is not worn (Air Force 1989b). 

Trichloroethylene is used as a solvent, in dry cleaning, in degreasing, and in limited use as a surgical anesthetic. 

The recycling of solvents in dry cleaning is very important, because solvents are too expensive for single use. Three different systems are used for the cleaning of the solvent in order for it to be recycled ...
