Myroxylon pereirae

Phenyl-2-propenoic acid [621 -82-9] commonly referred to as cinnamic acid, is a white crystalline soHd having a low intensity sweet, honeylike aroma. It has been identified as a principal constituent in the botanical exudates from Styrax IJquidamber orientalis) Benzoin Styrax ben in Pern Balsam [Myroxylon pereirae and Tolu Balsam (]Ayro>ylon balsamum) (4,5). In these, as well as numerous other natural products, it exists both as the free acid and in the form of one or more of its esters, as for example, methyl cinnamate, ben2yl cinnamate [103 1 -3] and cinnamyl cinnamate. [Pg.173]

Peru balsam oil is obtained by distillation of the balsam of the tree Myroxylon pereira (Royle) Klotzsch (Fabaceae), called peru balsam. It is a yellow to pale brown, slightly viscous liquid, which may form crystals. The oil has a rather sweet, balsamic odor. [Pg.213]

Coumarin was first isolated by Vogel in 1820 by extraction from tonka beans (Dipteryx odorata). It was subsequently identified in a large number of plants belonging to many different families. Its better known occurrences are in sweet clover (Melilotus alba and M. officinalis), sweet woodruff (Asperula odorata), vanilla leaf (Trilisa odoratissima), vanilla beans (Vanillaplanifolia), cassia (Cinnamorum cassia), lavender (Lavendula officinalis) and balsam of Peru (Myroxylon pereirae) (Perone, 1972 Maries et al, 1987 Boisde Meuly, 1993 Budavari, 1998). [Pg.196]

Balsam Pem Oil occurs as a yellow to pale brown, slightly viscous liquid having a sweet, balsamic odor. It is obtained by extraction or distillation of Pemvian Balsam obtained from Myroxylon pereirae Royle Klotzsche (Fam. Leguminosae). Occasionally, crystals may occur within the liquid. It is soluble in most fixed oils, and is soluble, with turbidity, in mineral oil. It is partly soluble in propylene glycol, but it is practically insoluble in glycerin. [Pg.42]

Of 443 individuals who were tested for contact sensitization, 5 had a positive reaction to A. montana and 9 to Calendula officinalis (marigold) a mixture of the two was positive in 18 cases (3). Sensitization was often accompanied by reactions to nickel, Myroxylon pereirae resin, fragrance mix, propolis, and colophon. [Pg.362]

Balsam of Peru is derived from species of Myroxylon such as Myroxylon balsamum and Myroxylon pereirae and has been used in medicinal and cosmetic ointments for centuries. It contains about 25 different substances, including triterpenoids, and can cause allergic reactions. Its sensitizing constituents have been determined (63). [Pg.1315]

Peru balsam, Peru oil. P. balsam is a dark red, viscous but still fluid mass. It is an oil-containing resin secreted when the bark of the indigenous Central American tree species Myroxylon pereirae (Fabaceae) is injured. P. oil is a yellow to light brown, somewhat viscous oil from which the contained cinnamic acid partially crystallizes and has an adhering, sweet, bal-samy odor and a warm bitter taste. [Pg.477]
