Asperula odorata

Coumarin was first isolated by Vogel in 1820 by extraction from tonka beans (Dipteryx odorata). It was subsequently identified in a large number of plants belonging to many different families. Its better known occurrences are in sweet clover (Melilotus alba and M. officinalis), sweet woodruff (Asperula odorata), vanilla leaf (Trilisa odoratissima), vanilla beans (Vanillaplanifolia), cassia (Cinnamorum cassia), lavender (Lavendula officinalis) and balsam of Peru (Myroxylon pereirae) (Perone, 1972 Maries et al, 1987 Boisde Meuly, 1993 Budavari, 1998). [Pg.196]

Coumarin. New-mown Hay.—Coumarin is a pleasant smelling compound, and is the odoriferous constituent of the plant Asperula odorata or wood ruff, and also of new-mown hay. It is also present in Tonka beans the extract of which is used as a substitute for vanilla. [Pg.727]

A. and the listed compounds occur mainly in Rubia-ceae but have also been detected in other plant families. A. is isolated from fresh woodruff Asperula odorata) and the bark of the New Zealand plants Co-pro strut robusta (1.2%), C. tenuifolia (2.9%), C. repens (1.7%), and C. arborea (0.6%) (all Rubiaceae). Paederoside and paedetosidic acids occur in the Japanese plant Paederia scandens (Rubiaceae). In the paederoside compounds the acetate group of A. is replaced by 5-methylthiocarbonate these are as yet the only known sulW-containing iridoid glucosides and appear to be the main cause of the unpleasant smell of Paederia species. [Pg.59]

The first iridoid glycoside to be identified was asperuloside from woodruff—Asperula odorata (Rubiaceae). Other compounds of therapeutic significance include aucubin from plantain, Plantago spp. (Plantaganaceae), procumbin from devil s claw and loganin from bogbean, Menyanthes spp. (Menyanthaceae). [Pg.54]
