Benzoic acid in the free state, or in the form of simple derivatives such as salts, esters, and amides, is widely distributed in nature. Gum benzoin (from styrax benzoin) may contain as much as 20% benzoic acid in the free state or in combinations easily broken up by heating. Acaroid resin (from Xanthorrhoca hasHHs) contains from 4.5 to 7%. Smaller amounts of the free acid are found in natural products including the scent glands of the beaver, the bark of the black cherry tree, cranberries, prunes, ripe cloves, and oil of anise seed. Pem and Tolu balsams contain benzyl benzoate the latter contains free benzoic acid as well. The urine of herbivorous animals contains a small proportion of the glycine derivative of benzoic acid, hippuric acid [495-69-2], (C6H5CONHCH2COOH). So-called natural benzoic acid is not known to be available as an item of commerce. [Pg.52]

BENZOIN. The term benzoin is used in botany to denote a ircc (Styrax benzoin) and a resin obtained from it. The former is a tall, quick-grow ing tree native to Sumatra and Java. The tree has alternate entire leaves, the... [Pg.192]

Certain resins occur in combination with fragrant volatile oils. One of these is benzoin, obtained from Styrax benzoin by cutting notches in the bark and allowing the resin to collect in them. It is used in making perfumes, in incense, and as a source of benzoic acid, used medicinally. [Pg.1438]

Resins, Oleoresins, Gum Resins, and Balsams.—These substances represent products of metabolism in many plants which are formed either normally as Turpentine, Asafcetida, Mastiche, etc., or as a result of pathological processes through injury to the plant tissues as Styrax, Benzoin, Balsam of Tolu and Peru, etc. They occur usually in special cavities such as secretion cells, glands, or secretion reservoirs. [Pg.92]

Benzoin, or gum benzoin, is a resinous secretion obtained from cuts made in the trunk or branches of the Styrax benzoin tree. It contains coniferyl benzoate, benzoic acid, benzyl cinnamate, vanillin (a phenol aldehyde) and a number of triterpenes. ... [Pg.184]

Benzoe Sumatra resinoid is obtained by solvent extraction of the resin from Styrax benzoin Dryand., a tree growing predominantly on the island of Sumatra. Benzoe Sumatra resinoid is a dark brown, viscous liquid with a warm, powdery, sweet-balsamic odor. Its main volatile, odor-determining components are derivatives of benzoic and cinnamic acids and vanillin [284]. [Pg.188]
