List of Chemicals

Enter the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) registry number in Section 1.2 exactly as it appears in Table II, pages 40-48, for the chemical being reported. CAS numbers are cross-referenced with an alphabetical list of chemical names in Table II of these instructions, tf you are reporting one of the chemical categories in Table II (e.g., copper compounds), enter not applicable, NA, In the CAS number space.

Make a list of chemical flocculating agents and relate each of these chemicals to the specific types of contaminants they are best suited to handle in wastewater. Obtain MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) for each of these chemicals. 

According to EPCRA, facilities should provide either an MSDS or a list of chemicals to the SERC, LEPC, and local fire department. If facilities choose to supply only a list, the list should include specific information including health hazards, fire hazards, reactivity hazards, and physical data for every chemical on the list. Although only a list is required, the additional requirements for specific information makes the submission of only a list a rare occurrence. The use of MSD sheets is one of the most commonly used tools to convey this information. 

The chemical resistance of PTFE is almost universal It resists attack by aqua regia, hot fummg nitnc acid, hot caustic, chlorine, chlorosulfonic acid, and all solvents. Despite this broad chemical resistance, PTFE is attacked by molten alkali metals, ammonia solutions of such metals, chlorine trifluoride, and gaseous fluonne at elevated temperature and pressure PTFE swells or dissolves m certam highly fluonnated oils near its melting point. Specific lists of chemicals compatible with PTFE are available [/.8]... 

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration s regulation 29CFR1910.119 provides a regulatory framework for process safety management. This regulation applies to facilities handling a spedfied list of chemicals above indicated threshold quantities. 

For example, initial implementation may be confined to those chemicals and processes covered by the OSHA process safety rule, which is limited to a specific list of chemicals and excludes processes that meet specific criteria. However, the OSHA regulation does not cover all materials and processes that may represent process risks. 

The most complete listing of chemicals in commerce is Chem Sources published annually by the Directories Publishing Company, Flemington, New Jersey. This volume lists by name all commercially available chemicals with addresses of suppliers. 

The more usual method of presenting data on the corrosiveness of various chemicals is by reference to a specific class of metal or material. Thus in the present book, the sections devoted to individual classes of materials contains lists of chemicals and in some cases details of their behaviour under various conditions of concentration, flow and temperature (see in particular the sections devoted to metals and alloys). 

Endosulfan has been released to the environment mainly as a result of its use as an insecticide. There are no known natural sources of the compound. Endosulfan and endosulfan sulfate are not contained in the list of chemicals for which releases are required to be reported to EPA for the SARA Section 313 Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) (EPA 1997a). 

The list of chemicals with endocrine-disrupting activity has increased considerably with the systematic screening of chemicals employing some of the methods described in the previons section. Here we expand on the list of known EDCs to illustrate the diversity of chemicals of concern, but the list is by no means exhaustive. 

When comparing different cabinets, there are a few clues as to which ones provide the best value. First of all, a manufacturer of laboratory furniture should have data on the chemical resistance of finishes used. Even though nobody expects to splash reagents over the fronts of the cabinets, accidents do happen. Resistance data should be compared to a list of chemicals to be handled in the laboratory. A costly finish with outstanding resistance may not be needed in all cases. 

The reaction of magnesium metal with aqueous strong acid, which appears in Figure 4-12. illustrates the fundamental principles of oxidation-reduction. When a piece of magnesium is dropped into a solution of hydrochloric acid, a reaction starts almost Immediately. The metal dissolves, and gas bubbles from the solution. The gas is H2, and analysis of the solution reveals the presence of ions. A list of chemical species before and after the reaction... 

Trichloroethylene is on the list of chemicals appearing in "Toxic Chemicals Subject to Section 313 of the Emergency Plaiming and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986" (EPA 19871, 1988c). 

Prop 65 is a list of chemicals that have been confirmed by the state of California to be carcinogens and or reproductive toxins. Chemicals are hsted by name and by CAS ... 

NTP maintains a list of chemicals that are carcinogens, likely carcinogens or probable carcinogens. 

The Danish List of Undesirable Substances is a list of chemicals of concern that the government believes should be avoided to the extent feasible in commerce. Using a systematic analysis, substances are selected automatically if they meet some clear and defined criteria, for example, problematic classifications, because they are imder suspicion for being PBT/vPvB (Persistent, Bioaccumulative, Toxic/very Persistent, very Bio accumulative) or endocrine-disrupting. 

There are to be found lists of chemical substances in handbooks for each of which log P = f (T), and whose coefficients are to be inserted, are given. These lists are limited but nevertheless provide solutions for the most common chemical substances. When there are several experimental estimates of vapour pressures it is possible to estimate the importance of the experimental uncertainty from the standard deviation of the measurements. The relevance of the values can be verified from a series of different sources (to be rigorous, checking that it is a Gaussian sequence would be required).

Chemcyclopedia. An annual supplement to Chemical Engineering News (C EN), Chemcyclopedia [64] provides a listing of chemicals, trade names, packaging, special shipping requirements, potential applications, and CAS Registry Numbers, if available. Chemicals are listed in categories. By accessing the online edition, users may obtain detailed information about chemicals and companies. For example, users can search for specific chemicals... 

U.S. EPA may list a waste as hazardous for any and all of the above reasons. The majority of listed wastes fall into the toxic waste category. To decide if a waste should be a toxic listed waste, U.S. EPA first determines whether it typically contains harmful chemical constituents. An appendix to RCRA contains a list of chemical compounds or elements that scientific studies have shown to have toxic, carcinogenic, mutagenic, or teratogenic effects on humans or other life forms. If a waste contains chemical constituents found on the appendix list, U.S. EPA then evaluates 11 other factors to determine if the wastestream is likely to pose a threat in the absence of special restrictions on its handling. These additional considerations include a risk assessment and study of past cases of damage caused by the waste. 

A weekly publication of McGraw-Hill. This excellent pubheation concentrates on the news and business aspects of the chemical industry. It periodically has excellent marketing and sales studies for various products. It also publishes annually a plant-site-selection issue and a Buyers Guide. The Buyers Guide lists the major producers and the source of supply for over 6,000 chemical products, and has a list of chemical trade names. It publishes, quarterly, the current financial condition of 300 companies involved in chemical processing. 

A monthly pubhcation of McGraw-Hill. It is oriented to marketing, business, and production. Annually it issues the Modern Plastics Encyclopedia. This gives a list of chemical suppliers, equipment manufacturers, polymer properties, equipment descriptions, and machinery selector charts.
