Latex binder

In other areas, POD has been used to improve the wear resistance of a mbber latex binder by incorporation of 25% of Oksalon fibers. Heat-resistant laminate films, made by coating a polyester film with POD, have been used as electrical insulators and show good resistance to abrasion and are capable of 126% elongation. In some instances, thin sheets of PODs have been used as mold release agents. For this appHcation a resin is placed between the two sheets of POD, which is then pressed in a mold, and the sheets simply peel off from the object and mold after the resin has cured. POD-based membranes exhibit salt rejection properties and hence find potential as reverse osmosis membranes in the purification of seawater. PODs have also been used in the manufacturing of electrophotographic plates as binders between the toner and plate. These improved binders produce sharper images than were possible before. [Pg.535]

Almost all synthetic binders are prepared by an emulsion polymerization process and are suppHed as latexes which consist of 48—52 wt % polymer dispersed in water (101). The largest-volume binder is styrene—butadiene copolymer [9003-55-8] (SBR) latex. Most SBRlatexes are carboxylated, ie, they contain copolymerized acidic monomers. Other latex binders are based on poly(vinyl acetate) [9003-20-7] and on polymers of acrylate esters. Poly(vinyl alcohol) is a water-soluble, synthetic biader which is prepared by the hydrolysis of poly(viayl acetate) (see Latex technology Vinyl polymers). [Pg.22]

Air Products, a manufacture of latex binders, has completed a comprehensive study of flame retardants for latex binder systems. This study evaluates the inherent flammability of the major polymer types used as nonwovens binders. In addition, 18 of the most common flame retardants from several classes of materials were evaluated on polyester and rayon substrates. Two of the most widely recognized and stringent small scale tests, the NFPA 701 vertical burn test and the MVSS-302 horizontal burn test, are employed to measure flame retardancy of a latex binder-flame retardant system. Quantitative results of the study indicate clear-cut choices of latex binders for flame retardant nonwoven substrates, as well as the most effective binder-flame retardant combinations available. [Pg.145]

Another experimental program was conducted with binder-flame retardant combinations on rando-rayon. The eighteen flame retardants were paired with a latex binder and screened for performance in an NFPA-701 flame retardant test. Seven of the best performing flame retardants were chosen for further study. Additionally, since all seven happened to be non-durable, the best performing durable flame retardant was added at a higher add-on and flame retardant level. [Pg.154]

The performance of several latex binders in flame retardant testing of nonwoven polyester or rayon substrates with and without added flame retardants has been investigated. Correlation of coating flammability (i.e. by oxygen index) to actual performance on a substrate is poor. Results generated on both rayon and polyester... [Pg.154]

Forming packages composed of wound strands normally are not supplied to industrial users wilhuul further processing. Strands are twisted and plied before being woven into fabric. A plied yarn, for example, is coated with a latex binder before being used as a tire-cord reinforcemenl. [Pg.618]

Back-coating is the major area where bromine-based flame-retardant compounds are used for textiles. This technique is applied primarily in applications such as upholstery and wall coverings. The system would comprise an FR additive with a latex binder, the latter often based on acrylic or ethylene vinylacetate. Use of vinylidene chloride-modified acrylics reduce the amount of tire-retardant additive required. [Pg.91]

BERSET 2425 is a melamine based coating insolubilizer. It is a very effective crosslinker for starch, protein, P.V.A., and latex binders in pigmented, or non-pigmented coatings. BERSET 2425 is sufficiently reactive so that 80-90% of insolubilization is achieved directly off the machine and completely developed within a day. Unlike other crosslinkers, BERSET 2425 has little or no effect on coating viscosities. BERSET 2425 has an advantage of having a very low free formaldehyde. [Pg.99]

Can be applied to non-wovens by incorporating it with the acrylic or latex binder. [Pg.151]

SPI as a co-binder in paper coating binder formulations remains a vital patt of the paper industry. Today, soy protein coatings are used in a variety of coated papet and paperboard applications. There should be steady growth in soy protein used in this application, provided SPI remains price-competitive with synthetic latex binders, which is likely, due to projected high petroleum prices relative to agricultural products. [Pg.567]

Among the various applications which have not been treated in greater detail are the spray coat applications and the underlayment applications. The spray coat applications are based on combinations of cement and other fillers, together with a latex binder. These applications may be applied by banish, roller and trowel, as well as by spray. They are often promoted as a substitute for "rubbing" concrete. [Pg.93]

Textile pigment printing, involves the printing of an insoluble coloring material on a textile fabric. The pigment, which has no affinity for the fibers of the fabric, is adhered to the fabric by a resin binder. It has been shown that a suitable pigment may serve as an UV stabilizer as such. Resin binders are acrylic copolymer binders, styrene-butadiene latex binders, or modified nitrile polymer binders. [Pg.435]
