Both RDX and HMX are substantially desensitized by mixing with TNT to form cyclotols (RDX) and octols (HMX) or by coating with waxes, synthetic polymers, and elastomeric biaders. Most of the RDX made ia the United States is converted to Composition B (60% RDX, 40% TNT, 1 part wax added). Composition A5 (RDX 98.5/stearic acid 1.5) and composition C4 (RDX91/nonexplosive plasticizer) account for the next largest uses. HMX is used as a propellant and ia maximum-performance plastic bonded explosives such as PBX 9401 and PBX N5 and the octols (147—150). [Pg.16]

Uses. Vinyhdene fluoride is used for the manufacture of PVDF and for copolymerization with many fluorinated monomers. One commercially significant use is the manufacture of high performance fluoroelastomers that include copolymers of VDF with hexafluoropropylene (HFP) (62) or chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) (63) and terpolymers with HEP and tetrafluoroethylene (TEE) (64) (see Elastomers, synthetic-fluorocarbon elastomers). There is intense commercial interest in thermoplastic copolymers of VDE with HEP (65,66), CTEE (67), or TEE (68). Less common are copolymers with trifluoroethene (69), 3,3,3-trifluoro-2-trifluoromethylpropene (70), or hexafluoroacetone (71). Thermoplastic terpolymers of VDE, HEP, and TEE are also of interest as coatings and film. A thermoplastic elastomer that has an elastomeric VDE copolymer chain as backbone and a grafted PVDE side chain has been developed (72). [Pg.386]

Uses ndReactions. Some of the principal uses for P-pinene are for manufacturing terpene resins and for thermal isomerization (pyrolysis) to myrcene. The resins are made by Lewis acid (usuaUy AlCl ) polymerization of P-pinene, either as a homopolymer or as a copolymer with other terpenes such as limonene. P-Pinene polymerizes much easier than a-pinene and the resins are usehil in pressure-sensitive adhesives, hot-melt adhesives and coatings, and elastomeric sealants. One of the first syntheses of a new fragrance chemical from turpentine sources used formaldehyde with P-pinene in a Prins reaction to produce the alcohol, Nopol (26) (59). [Pg.413]

Waterproof. Waterproofing barrier systems may be either hot- or cold-appHed. The hot-appHed generaUy involve a bituminous material such as asphalt used in conjunction with a reinforcing fabric such as roofing felt, cotton, or glass cloth. Cold-appHed can be bituminous or elastomeric materials either in Hquid or sheet form, with or without fabric reinforcement. Liquid elastomeric treatments include neoprene, polyurethanes, and blends of these or epoxies with bituminous materials. Among the commonly used precured elastomeric sheet materials are neoprene, polyisobutylene, EPDM mbber, and plasticized PVC. Compatibility and Corrosion. Gas turbine fuels must be compatible with the elastomeric materials and metals used in fuel systems. Elastomers are used for O-rings, seals, and hoses as well as pump parts and tank coatings. Polymers tend to swell and to improve their sealing abiUty when in contact with aromatics, but degree of swell is a function of both elastomer-type and aromatic molecular weight. Rubbers can also be attacked by peroxides that form in fuels that are not properly inhibited (see Elastomers, synthetic Rubber, natural). [Pg.416]

Exxon products appear to release via a unique mechanism. Like other polymer-coated technologies, the penetration of water iato the granule is purely by diffusion. However, as water enters the particle, an osmotic pressure is created as the fertilizer is solubilized. This pressure causes an expansion of the elastomeric coating and the particle swells to many times its original diameter. As the particle swells, the coating becomes increasingly thinner to the point where it caimot contain the internal pressure and the nutrient is released. [Pg.137]

The study of acid-base interaction is an important branch of interfacial science. These interactions are widely exploited in several practical applications such as adhesion and adsorption processes. Most of the current studies in this area are based on calorimetric studies or wetting measurements or peel test measurements. While these studies have been instrumental in the understanding of these interfacial interactions, to a certain extent the interpretation of the results of these studies has been largely empirical. The recent advances in the theory and experiments of contact mechanics could be potentially employed to better understand and measure the molecular level acid-base interactions. One of the following two experimental procedures could be utilized (1) Polymers with different levels of acidic and basic chemical constitution can be coated on to elastomeric caps, as described in Section 4.2.1, and the adhesion between these layers can be measured using the JKR technique and Eqs. 11 or 30 as appropriate. For example, poly(p-amino styrene) and poly(p-hydroxy carbonyl styrene) can be coated on to PDMS-ox, and be used as acidic and basic surfaces, respectively, to study the acid-base interactions. (2) Another approach is to graft acidic or basic macromers onto a weakly crosslinked polyisoprene or polybutadiene elastomeric networks, and use these elastomeric networks in the JKR studies as described in Section 4.2.1. [Pg.134]

The viscosity of elastomeric adhesives determines their method of application. Typically, solvent-borne rubber compounds require low viscosities for application. Thus, viscosities lower than 0.6 Pas for spray, curtain or dip applications are required, whereas for brush application viscosities lower than 5 Pa s are generally used. Roll- coating technology requires viscosities between 5 and 15 Pa s. [Pg.577]

In addition, it should exhibit a fairly high hysteresis level that would have the effect of dissipating the sharp mechanical impulse loads as heat.
