Each year, Americans report over three million fires leading to 29,000 injuries and 4,500 deaths (1). The direct property losses exceed 8 biUion (1) and the total annual cost to our society has been estimated at over 100 biUion (2). Personal losses occur mosdy in residences where furniture, wall coverings, and clothes are frequently the fuel. Tunnel Test. The tunnel test is widely used to test the flame spread potential of building products such as electrical cable (15) and wall coverings (16). The test apparatus consists of a tunnel 7.62 x 0.445 m x 0.305 m ia cross section, one end of which contains two gas burners. The total heat suppHed by the burners is 5.3 MJ/min. The test specimen (7.62 m x 50.8 cm), attached to the ceiling, is exposed to the gas flames for 10 minutes while the maximum flame spread, temperature, and smoke evolved are measured. Some laboratories may even want to consider using wallpaper in a limited area. Fire risk assessment is made in order to determine the overall value of decreasing fire hazard in a particular scenario. The level of fire risk that is acceptable for a situation is, normally, a societal, and not a technical, decision. Therefore, fire hazard assessments are generally more common than fire risk assessments. The NFPA Research Foundation has undertaken a project to develop a methodology for fire risk assessment. It has done this by studying four cases in detail upholstered furniture in residential environments, wire and cable in concealed spaces in hotels and motels, floor coverings in offices and wall coverings in restaurants. [Pg.475]
