This class of materials includes inhibited greases produced by impregnation of a polymer thickener into liquid oils foamed by the inhibitor vapors. The polymer forms a skeleton that, under high loads, imparts the properties of a solid to the lubricant p < 0.1 — 2.0 kPa). Thanks to the high viscosity of the foamed oil, it localizes in the polymer skeleton cells so that the system becomes quasi-compatible. It can be roughly referred to as a plastic, although showing the properties of both solid and liquid polymer materials. [Pg.63]

Inhibited greases were until recently the major and in fact unique material for preserving hardware. Today they tend to be replaced by liquid inhibited lubricants, thin coats and films. Sealing lubricants are used to tighten or to alleviate screwing/unscrewing of threaded joints in engineering, machine-tool construction and the oil and gas industry. [Pg.74]

Lithium hydroxide can be used for preparation of numerous lithium salts. The dominant use is the preparation of lithium stearate [4485-12-5], which is added to lubricating greases in amounts up to about 10% by weight. This salt has very low water solubiHty and extends the acceptable viscosity for the grease to both low and high temperatures (see Lubrication and lubricants). Lithium hydroxide is also used in production of dyes (62) and has been proposed as a source of lithium ion for inhibition of alkaH-aggregate expansive reactivity in concrete (63). [Pg.226]

Sulfonic acid salts have found widespread use in the area of corrosion inhibition. Lubrizol Corporation produces a wide variety of sulfonic acids, particularly in the form of magnesium salts, for use in lubricant formulations, anticorrosion coatings, greases, and resins (146,147). Nature of the metal surface Clean, smooth, metal surfaces usually require a lower concentration of inhibitor for protection than do rough or dirty surfaces. Relative figures for minimum concentrations of benzoate, chromate and nitrite necessary to inhibit the corrosion of mild steel with various types of surface finish have been given in a recent laboratory studyThese results show that benzoate effectiveness is particularly susceptible to surface preparation. Nature of the environment This is usually water, an aqueous solution or a two- (or more) component system in which water is one component. Inhibitors are, however, sometimes required for non-aqueous liquid systems. These include pure organic liquids (Al in chlorinated hydrocarbons) various oils and greases and liquid metals (Mg, Zr and Ti have been added to liquid Bi to prevent mild steel corrosion by the latter ). The practice of corrosion inhibition requires that the inhibitive species should have easy access to the metal surface. Surfaces should therefore be clean and not contaminated by oil, grease, corrosion products, water hardness scales, etc. Furthermore, care should be taken to avoid the presence of deposited solid particles, e.g. stones, swarf, building materials, etc. This ideal state of affairs is often difficult to achieve but there are many cases where less than adequate consideration has been given to the preparation of systems to receive inhibitive treatment. Acid treatments, notably with 3-5% citric acid, with or without associated detergent washes, are often recommended and adopted for cleaning systems prior to inhibition. However, it is not always appreciated that these treatments will not remove particulate material particularly when, as is often the case, the material is insoluble in acids. [Pg.801]

Control of foulants and corrosion debris Because of the very large volume in these HW systems, there is an obvious reluctance to unnecessarily drain them down because of the development of waterside problems. Therefore, it is important to ensure that before regular operation they are provided with a proper precommission cleaning procedure. Oils, greases and waxes are used for the temporary inhibition of corrrosion. They act as a barrier, preventing the condensation of water on the metal surface.
