Proprietary methods are developed which inject chemical detergent solutions into the oil reservoirs to increase the viscosity of the remaining oil reservoirs. After the chemical detergent solutions are injected, polymer thickened water is provided behind the chemical detergent to drive the oil towards producing wells.

Where the vapours to be controlled are flammable, many of these foams are quite similar to the protein, fluoroprotein, and aqueous-film-forming foams used in firefighting [590,594,598] (see also Section 12.9). Where longer-term odour and toxicity control are more important many of these foams are polymer-thickened and gelling foams [592-594]. Other applications of foam blankets are discussed in Sections 10.5 and 13. 

A foam that, in addition to the stabilizing surfactants, contains polymer and a cross-linking agent. The foam is first generated as a polymer-thickened foam, and after a delay period, gels. See also Stiff Foam. 

There are three chapters in this volume, two of which address the microscale. Ploehn and Russel address the Interactions Between Colloidal Particles and Soluble Polymers, which is motivated by advances in statistical mechanics and scaling theories, as well as by the importance of numerous polymeric flocculants, dispersants, surfactants, and thickeners. U.S. Patent 5,798,324 discloses a glass cleaner containing a synthetic polymer thickener in the presence of certain glycol ethers, nonionic surfactants, and linear alcohols that increases viscosity synergistically. Cited compositions exhibit optimal vertical cling and ease of use. 

A few recent patents are listed in Table 7.19 that describe the cleaning of really tough, burnt-on soiled dishware. In general these products are alkaline (pH > 8), might be thickened with a polymer thickener, and may contain a soluble abrasive. In one case, the use of branched ethoxy sulfate surfactants proves useful in cleaning heavily soiled dishware.

There are also cleaners that are formulated with polymer thickeners to reduce misting [326], In this case, the object is to increase the particle size of the droplets formed upon spraying so as to decrease the number of droplets that will continue to float in the air. The longer a particle floats, the more likely that a consumer...

This class of materials includes inhibited greases produced by impregnation of a polymer thickener into liquid oils foamed by the inhibitor vapors. The polymer forms a skeleton that, under high loads, imparts the properties of a solid to the lubricant p < 0.1 — 2.0 kPa). Thanks to the high viscosity of the foamed oil, it localizes in the polymer skeleton cells so that the system becomes quasi-compatible. It can be roughly referred to as a plastic, although showing the properties of both solid and liquid polymer materials.
