Lubricating grease

During the formulation of an oil, blending of all these components gives an extremely wide variety of products described in the classification. Nevertheless, the lubricating greases make up a special product category among them. 

Petroleum. Apart from its use ia petrochemicals manufacture, there are a number of small, scattered uses of lime ia petroleum (qv) production. These are ia making red lime (drilling) muds, calcium-based lubricating grease, neutralization of organic sulfur compounds and waste acid effluents, water treatment ia water flooding (secondary oil recovery), and use of lime and pozzolans for cementing very deep oil wells. 

Lithium hydroxide can be used for preparation of numerous lithium salts. The dominant use is the preparation of lithium stearate [4485-12-5], which is added to lubricating greases in amounts up to about 10% by weight. This salt has very low water solubiHty and extends the acceptable viscosity for the grease to both low and high temperatures (see Lubrication and lubricants). Lithium hydroxide is also used in production of dyes (62) and has been proposed as a source of lithium ion for inhibition of alkaH-aggregate expansive reactivity in concrete (63). 

Diphenylamine antioxidants are also widely used to stabili2e roofing asphalts, lubricating greases, silicone enamels, polyamides, acetal resias, and... 

Barium acetate [543-80-6] Ba(C2H202)2, crystallines from an aqueous solution of acetic acid and barium carbonate or barium hydroxide. The level of hydration depends on crystallization temperature. At <24.7°C the trihydrate, density 2.02 g/mL is formed from 24.7 to 41 °C barium acetate monohydrate [5908-64-5] density 2.19 g/mL precipitates and above 41 °C the anhydrous salt, density 2.47 g/mL results. The monohydrate becomes anhydrous at 110°C. At 20°C, 76 g of the monohydrate dissolves in 100 g of water. Barium acetate is used in printing fabrics, lubricating grease, and as a catalyst for organic reactions.

Grease Manufacture Selected lube oil fractions are blended with various metallic soaps to produce high viscosit lubricating greases.

The grease X is sub-divided into consistency numbers, in accordance with the system proposed by the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) of the USA. These consistency numbers are related to the worked penetration ranges of the greases as follows ... 

There are certain disadvantages as well as advantages in using grease as a lubricant. Greases do not dissipate heat as well as fluid lubricants, and for low-torque operation tend to offer more resistance than oil.

The smearing types of material are usually lubricating grease compositions, i.e. blends of soaps and lubricating oil, biit may be mixtures containing petrolatum, oil, lanolin or fatty material. They are softer than the hot-dip materials to pOrmit cold application by smearing.

Lithium compounds are used in ceramics, lubricants, and medicine. Small daily doses of lithium carbonate are an effective treatment for bipolar (manic-depressive) disorder but scientists still do not fully understand why. Lithium soaps—the lithium salts of long-chain carboxylic acids—are used as thickeners in lubricating greases for high-temperature applications because they have higher melting points than more conventional sodium and potassium soaps.
