Anti-oxidants are the most extensively used additives and will be found in oils and greases which are expected to operate for considerable periods or under conditions that would promote oxidation. Typical examples are crankcase oils and bearing greases. 

These are expensive but, in precision applications, they offer the low friction and lack of play that are characteristics of the more usual rolling journal bearings. Grease or adhesive oil usually effects lubrication.

Bears Grease and Beef Marrow.—The fat of the common bear is soft, and not unpleasant in odor when carefully rendered. It is a favorite grease for the hair, and for that purpose, as well as to cheapen it, is often mixed with marrow obtained from the marrow bonce of boef cattle. 

To prepare a painted fabric for comparative purposes, small bands of ferrous oxide, an alizarin/purpurin mixture, ground up bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis L.) and bedstraw (Galium verum L.) were painted on linen fabric (Testfabrics L-57). As carriers or binder for the pigment colorants to be painted on the fibrous materials, beef fat was used as a substitute for bear grease and egg white was used as source for albumin. The various combinations of these materials were mixed and painted on areas of the test fabric as outlined in Table III. The painted test fabric was left to diy for 24 hours.

Grease sometimes helps reduce friction because grease forms a film that keeps the moving materials apart. The friction within the grease, as it is pulled one way or the other, eventually causes the grease to decompose, which is why bearing grease in a machine must be periodically replaced, as well as oil and lubricants in automobiles. 

Another class of additives proposed for bearing greases is metal or metal alloy nanoparticles that are more anodic than the material of which the inner or outer raceways of ball and rolling element bearings are constructed [51]. These additives are suspended in the lubricant and movement of the rolling elements on the raceways within the bearing forms a film from the nanoparticles. 

In aircraft wheel bearings grease also has to withstand high-temperature conditions. The wheel brakes, which are in close proximity to the wheel bearings, can reach temperatures up to 550 C and it is important that the grease does not melt and run into the brake material reducing brake efficiency and possibly causing a fire.
