Infants Mother-infant interaction

In humans, studies of hormone and behavior interactions affecting maternal behavior have been limited to correlations between endogenous hormones and a variety of behavioral events normally associated with childbirth. Individual differences, of largely unknown origins, have a major impact on human parental behavior. In addition, child rearing experience is a powerful positive determinant of maternal responsivity, and the social environment, including the presence of supportive companions, can affect subsequent mother-infant interactions (Sosa, et al., 1980).

A comprehensive test battery for behavioral and functional development is available for the cynomolgus monkey infant (Table 18.5). Many of these tests use the Brazleton-based human neonatal behavioral assessment scale, and the tests have been modified and adopted for use in NHP [34,35], For mother-infant interaction, a video recording is evaluated quantitatively using a special computer program. Mother-infant pairs are videotaped in a home cage situation at 3 to 4 months of age. This chapter describes the activities performed by the pharmacist as a member of the nutritional support team, which involve a range of tasks from indications, assessment of nutritional state, and the preparation of artificial nutrition for adults and children to concepts on basic dietetics and mother-infant nutrition. Saquinavir is subject to extensive first-pass metabolism by CYP3A4 and functions as a CYP3A4 inhibitor as well as a substrate thus, there are many potential drug-drug interactions (Table 49-4). A decreased dose of saquinavir is recommended when -administered with nelfinavir. Increased saquinavir levels when -administered with omeprazole necessitate close monitoring for toxicities. Digoxin levels may increase if co administered with saquinavir and should therefore be monitored. Liver function tests should be monitored if saquinavir is -administered with delavirdine or rifampin. There is no evidence of human teratogenicity from saquinavir there is short-term safety data for both mother and infant. 

As shown in the case of l-octen-3-one in the beginning of this chapter, aroma-active compounds show an interesting indication as media in human-environment interactions the role of this often disliked compound has some similarity to alarm pheromones. Flavor or smell of food can be categorized into food attractant molecules from this point of view. Infants are able to recognize the body odor of their mother and are attracted to it.189 An opposite example is represented by the notorious ability of skunks to spray, in which thiol compounds such as (E)-2-butene-1 -thiol and 3-methyl-l-butanethiol are used as potent repellents190(see Chapter 4.09).
