Hydrofining has been applied to Varsols and various other solvents for the control of odor, sulfur, and corrosion characteristics. For example. Hydrofining of Iranian and Kuwait distillates demonstrated its effectiveness as a means of producing "White Spirit", a high-quality solvent naphtha distributed in the United Kingdom. 

Synonyms Naphtha solvent, high-flash naphtha, refined naphtha, and heavy naphtha describe various fractions and grades. 

Preparation is by simple mixing. Tri- or tetrachloroethylene, high flash naphtha or other suitable solvents can be substituted for the kerosene. 

Early methods of separation employed such solvents as oleic acid/ crude coal-tar solvent naphtha, light pyridine,5 etc. Based on the selective solution of phenanthrene by the coal-tar naphtha, and of carbazole liy the light pyridine, Clark proposed a complicated scheme for the separation and recovery of all three of these constituents. Recently, organic liquid compounds containing the furan nucleus have been found to have a highly selective solvent action on phenanthrene and carbazole." Thns, furfural while dissolving phenanthrene and carbazole does not have a marked solvent action on anthracene at low temperatures. However, at elevated temperatures it does dissolve anthracene with the result that it is possible... 

Solvents used for paint removal are able to dissolve or considerably swell physically drying binders (e.g., vinyl chloride copolymers, cellulose nitrate, polyacrylates) and chemically cross-linked coatings (e.g., oil-based paints, dried alkyd resins, cross-linked polyester-melamine resins, cross-linked epoxy and isocyanate coatings) [14.237]. A combination of dichloromethane with low-boiling ketones or esters is particularly suitable. Small amounts of high-boiling solvents with a low volatility (e.g., tetrahydronaphthalene, solvent naphtha, methyl benzyl alcohol, or benzyl alcohol) are added to these mixtures to retard evaporation and increase the solvency. Modern paint removers do not contain chlorinated hydrocarbons, they are formulated on the basis of high boilers (e.g., dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, propylene carbonate, and yV-methylpyrrolidone) in combination with alcohols and aromatics, or consist of aqueous, frequently alkaline or acidic systems.

High exposures remained eommon in paint and printing ink industry still in 1970 s for example, most solvent measurements eondueted in these industries in Finland exeeeded the present OELs. Water-based paints are today elearly most eommon in eonstmetion painting. Alkyd-based eonstmetion paints with white spirit (Stoddard solvent, mineral spirit or solvent naphtha) as a solvent are, however, still produeed. Solvent-based paints have remained most eommon in industrial painting, even though the solventless powder paints are also produeed in large quantities.

Butane-Naphtha Catalytic Liquid-Phase Oxidation. Direct Hquid-phase oxidation ofbutane and/or naphtha [8030-30-6] was once the most favored worldwide route to acetic acid because of the low cost of these hydrocarbons. Butane [106-97-8] in the presence of metallic ions, eg, cobalt, chromium, or manganese, undergoes simple air oxidation in acetic acid solvent (48). The peroxidic intermediates are decomposed by high temperature, by mechanical agitation, and by action of the metallic catalysts, to form acetic acid and a comparatively small suite of other compounds (49). Ethyl acetate and butanone are produced, and the process can be altered to provide larger quantities of these valuable materials. Ethanol is thought to be an important intermediate (50) acetone forms through a minor pathway from isobutane present in the hydrocarbon feed. Formic acid, propionic acid, and minor quantities of butyric acid are also formed.
