The initial products are the p-methyl benzyl alcohol and p-methyl benzal-dehyde. Under the reaction conditions these are further oxidized, first to p-toluic acid, and ultimately to terephthalic acid. The alkoxy and peroxy radicals that take part in the oxidation of p-xylene to p-toluic acid are shown by 8.13 to 8.16.

There was skepticism of Ahlquist s concept since no compounds capable of blocking P-receptor responses were known. This occurred ten years later with the synthesis of 3,4-dichloro-a[(isopropylamino)-methyl]-benzyl alcohol, which is erroneously referred to as dichloroisoproterenol (DCI). DCI appeared to be a competitive antagonist to IPR. For example, reversal of bronchoconstriction by IPR could be negated by DCI. 

Paraformaldehyde (165 g dried for several days over phosphoric oxide in a vacuum) is added to a filtered ethereal solution of benzylmagnesium chloride (from 3.4 moles of benzyl chloride). The mixture is boiled, with stirring, for 18 h, then poured on ice and acidified with dilute sulfuric acid.
