Alkyd-based

Both regulatory limits on the amount of organic solvents allowed in paints and advancements in alkyd resin technology have resulted in the development of higher soHds alkyd resins that requke less solvent for dilution and viscosity reduction. In addition, developments of water-reducible alkyds and alkyd emulsions have resulted in alkyd-based paints that requke less organic solvent in thek formulations. 

Mineral spirits, a type of petroleum distillate popular for use in solvent-based house paints, consist mainly of aUphatic hydrocarbons with a trace of aromatics. This type of solvent finds use in oil- and alkyd-based house paints because of its good solvency with typical house paint binders and its relatively slow evaporation rate which imparts good bmshabiUty, open-time, and leveling. Other properties include lower odor, relatively lower cost, as well as safety and health hazard characteristics comparable to most other organic solvents. 

These paints are resin based and the paints required for sheet-metal surfaces are genertilly alkyd-based resins. For general industrial applications, tiny of the following types of enamel paints may be used,... 

Air-drying alkyds may also be used for the production of primers and undercoats. In the case of primers, the shorter the oil length of the binder the faster the drying, but the lower the tolerance for wire-brushed rusted-steel surfaces. Alkyd-based undercoats are not significantly different in performance from those based on oil varnishes the choice is frequently dictated by economic considerations.

Linolenic acid is responsible for tlie high yellowing tendency of alkyds based on linseed oil fatty acids. Alkyds made with nondrying oils or their fatly acids have excellent color and gloss stability. They arc frequently (lie choice for white industrial baking enamels and lacquers.
