Benzene is the simplest and most important member of the aromatic hydrocarbons and should not be confused with benzine, a low boiling petroleum fraction composed chiefly of aUphatic hydrocarbons. The term benzole, which denotes commercial products that are largely benzene, is not common in the United States, but is stiU used in Europe. [Pg.37]

Note, however, benzene with an e, should not be confused with benzine, with an i. Benzine, with an i, refers to petroleum distillates, and is an old term for gasoline. The chemical rings can also link up with chains and other rings to form still more complex compounds. These chemicals are widely used in industry in all sorts of forms from solvents to pharmaceuticals. The list is virtually inexhaustible hence, thousands of new compounds are added to the workplace every year and many are never investigated to determine the extent of their potential toxicity. [Pg.26]

Water. — On mixing equal volumes of acetone and petroleum benzin (boiling-point 40° to 70° C.), two layers should not be formed. [Pg.1]

BENZINE. A product of petroleum boiling between 120°F and 150"F (49 - 66r C) and composed of aliphatic hydrocarbons. Not to be confused with benzene, which is a single chemical compound and an aromatic hydrocarbon. [Pg.192]

A mixt of hydrocarbons obtd from the second portion of the fractional distillates, betw 70-90°, of crude petroleum. It is a clear col liq of d 0.640 -0.675 insol in w but miscible with ale, eth, oils and carbon disulfide(Ref 1). This mixt is considered by Sax(Ref 3) to be si toxic but dangerous whqn exposed to heat or flame. This mixt should not be confused with benzene or benzene homo-logues. It can be used as an insecticide and as a solv for some expls. The Germans used it during WW II as one of the fuels(together with O as oxidizer) for propelling the missile of WWII called V-l(Ref 4). Benzine with A1 dust and liq O as oxidizer was proposed by Stettbacher(Ref 2) as a rocket propellant... [Pg.66]

A solution of 10 grams of the sample dissolved with heating in 990 grams of a mixed solvent of phenol and tetrachloroethane (6 4 by weight) was placed in a thermostat at 30°C and fractionally precipitated with petroleum benzine to obtain a cumulative weight distribution. The sample used for this measurement was a PET of rjsp/c 0.83, obtained by the reaction of PET of rjsp/c 0.50 via the addition of 1.0 mole % of diphenyl carbonate to the terephthalic acid component and with the reaction carried out in vacuo for 3 minutes, then cooled immediately. [Pg.204]
