Hand lotions/creams

Used extensively as binder, emulsifier, or stabilizer in toothpastes also in hand lotions, creams, tablets, and others. 

Uses Emulsifier, suspending agent, thickener, stabilizer, binder in foods (salad dressings, sauces, bakery toppings, flavor syrups, confeclionety), phamnaceuti-cals (emulsions, jellies, creams), cosmetics (toothpaste, hair lotions, hand lotions, creams), industrial (textiles, ceramics, polishes, cigars)... 

There are dozens of other examples around the house for which we have similar quality standards in terms of their resistance to flow. Examples include other food products such as honey, pancake syrup, gravy, and ice cream toppings. Hygiene products include shampoo, hand lotion, and liquid soap. We might also cite pharmaceutical formulations, such as cough medicines, milk of magnesia, and liquid dietary supplements, as well as home and car care products such as caulks, glues, and motor oils. 

Because of the widespread applications of surface chemistry, practically all industries, knowingly or otherwise, make use of the principles of surface chemistry. Countless cosmetic and pharmaceutical products are emulsions—lotions, creams, ointments, suppositories, etc. Food emulsions include milk, margarine, salad dressings and sauces. Adhesive emulsions, emulsion paints, self-polishing waxes, waterless hand cleaners and emulsifiable insecticide concentrates are commonplace examples of emulsions, which fall within the province of surface chemistry. Other products winch function in accordance with the principles of smface chemistry include detergents of every variety, fabric softeners, antistatic agents, mold releases, dispersants and flocculants.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) can help reduce the frequency and severity of hand and finger injruy. Although fingers are harder to protect, they can be shielded from many common injuries. Personal protection is available in the form of gloves, mitts, finger cots, thimbles, hand pads, sleeves and hand lotions or barrier creams. 

The best way to train employees on the use of most types of PPE, including hand protection, is to demonstrate its use in an informal session before the start of the work day. Gather together one sample of each t3rpe of glove, lotion, cream, sleeve, or other type of hand protection in use on yoru worksite and do a mini-demonstration. You need not show eveiy worker every type of hand protection, but make sure you show each worker the type to be used for the work being performed by that person. 

Many important everyday materials are known to be colloidal heterogeneous systems. Milk, margarine, ice cream, mayonnaise, cosmetic creams, hand lotions, blood, ink, paint, and other substances are heterogeneous systems that can flow or become solid, and contain structural entities with at least one linear dimension in the size range of several nanometers to tens of microns. 

Other poly(saccharides) find practical applications. For example, konjac and carrageenan have numerous cosmetic and medical uses. Konjac is used in controlled release applications and as a barrier film to protect wounds. Carrageenans are used in dentifrices, hand lotions, shaving creams, shampoos and controlled release systems.i Poly(saccharides) derived from fungi have been shown to possess anti-tumor properties, and some recent research suggests curdlan sulfate may have antiviral activity, including potential anti-AIDS activity.
