New oilseed crops, currently studied as potential sources of specialty fatty acids, include Crambe abyssinica for erucic acid, Limnanthes alba for very long-chain fatty acids, Dimorphotheca pluvialis for dimor-phecolic acid, Lesquerella fendleri for les-querolic acid, Calendula officinalis for calendic acid, and Euphorbia lagascae and various Vernonia species for vernolic acid.194 The lowest cost sources (inedible fats and oils and palm oil fractions) are likely most likely to be exhausted first as world trade in industrial applications grows. Cornstarch is becoming a major feedstock for plastics production. This may compete with potential oil uses, but also will increase production of com oil. [Pg.1647]

Meadowfoam Limnanthes alba). This oil is unusual in that over 95% of its component acids are C20 or C22 compounds and include 5-20 1 (63-67%), 5-22 1 (2-4%), 13-22 1 (16-18%), and 5,13-22 2 (5-9%). It is being grown in the United States, and its potential uses are being thoroughly examined. Winter culti-vars now being developed are expected to improve the suitability of the crop to conditions in Northern Europe. Potential uses of this oil include cosmetic applications, production of dimer acid, as a lubricant, and via a wide range of novel derivatives based on reaction at the A5 double bond (134-138). [Pg.283]

Meadowfoam (Limnanthes alba) is a developing new erop grown on a eommereial scale ( 8000 acres in 1997) in the Willamette Valley of Oregon in the northwestern United States. Other small test plots are grown elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad. [Pg.52]
