In hand lotions

In general, an LSMBS is intended to address the properties of products at the consumer level. In the discussion below, the property is pesticide residues, and the product is commercially available fresh fruits and vegetables. However, similar considerations apply to the selection of other types of properties in other products, such as ingredients in hand lotions. 

Particularly relevant if the treated skin is likely to come in contact with water, such as in hand lotions and sun care products. 

Personal care and cosmetic products In hand lotions (as emollients/demulcents), in toothpaste, in cosmetics, in shampoo and hair conditioning formulations... 

In cosmetics, polyoxyl 35 castor oil is mainly used as a solubilizing agent for perfume bases and volatile oils in vehicles containing 30-50% v/v alcohol (ethanol or propan-2-ol). In hand lotions, it can be used to replace castor oil. 

Both psyllium and quince seeds are imported into the United States for limited, specialized uses. Almost all the psyllium seed arriving from India proceeds to pharmaceutical houses for use in laxative preparations utilizing the mucilage-containing seed husk. Quince seeds from Iran are purchased by cosmetics houses, principally for use in hand-lotions. Each user prepares his own mucilage extract directly from the seeds, as needed. Seed supplies are restricted, so that any unusual demand is reflected in increases in price. 

Products and Uses Commonly used in hand lotions, hair dressings, and dry-cleaning soap. It is an emulsifier (to aid in suspension of oily liquids) and prevents separation.

Used extensively as binder, emulsifier, or stabilizer in toothpastes also in hand lotions, creams, tablets, and others. 

Cetearyl methicone is a polysiloxane wax. It replaces petrolatum in such products as hand lotions to give them a nongreasy feel. 

Cleanliness comes very close to godliness in the laboratory. A worker always washes hands before eating or smoking, and many times in between. One thoughtful laboratory operator placed bottles of liquid skin cleanser and hand lotion next to all sinks. Apart from personal cleanliness, there are other important forms of protection for the worker. Most notable among these is eye protection. 

Hand lotions, of the emulsion type, are also, in most cases, oil in water emulsions. A true emulsifying agent is usually used to form the emulsion and for cleansing properties. Vegetable gums, like tragacanth or Irish moss extract, are added, not only to stabilize the emulsion but to increase the emollient properties, because of the added viscosity effect. 

There are dozens of other examples around the house for which we have similar quality standards in terms of their resistance to flow. Examples include other food products such as honey, pancake syrup, gravy, and ice cream toppings. Hygiene products include shampoo, hand lotion, and liquid soap. We might also cite pharmaceutical formulations, such as cough medicines, milk of magnesia, and liquid dietary supplements, as well as home and car care products such as caulks, glues, and motor oils.

As a rule, therefore, the demands of chemical and physical stability are similar for drugs and cosmetics. Under certain circumstances, the demands on physical stability may be especially critical as, for example, in hand and body lotions that have to perform under tropical conditions after having been exposed to the heat of the sun on the beach or after storage under arctic conditions in a ski hut.
