In practice resistivities between 0-08 and 0-29 ohm m have been recorded on coke breeze samples used in typical groundbeds. The effect of pressure on the measured value for resistivity of different coke samples has also been reported elsewhere ". The resistivity of bulk metallurgical coke is given as 0-024 ohm m with a slightly lower value of 0-020 ohm m at a pressure of 0-43 Nm whilst in calcined fluid petroleum coke at zero applied pressure the resistivity was 0 - 02 ohm m, which decreased to 0 - 002 ohm m when tested at an applied pressure of 1-31 MNm...

Non-applicable Fluids—Petroleum products whose vapor pressure at sampling and sample storage conditions are above 101 kPa (14.7 psi) and liquified gases (that is, LNG, LPG etc.) are not covered by this practice. 

In Section 5.2.8 we shall look at pressure-depth relationships, and will see that the relationship is a linear function of the density of the fluid. Since water is the one fluid which is always associated with a petroleum reservoir, an understanding of what controls formation water density is required. Additionally, reservoir engineers need to know the fluid properties of the formation water to predict its expansion and movement, which can contribute significantly to the drive mechanism in a reservoir, especially if the volume of water surrounding the hydrocarbon accumulation is large. 

To overcome these difficulties, drilling fluids are treated with a variety of mud lubricants available from various suppHers. They are mostly general-purpose, low toxicity, nonfluorescent types that are blends of several anionic or nonionic surfactants and products such as glycols and glycerols, fatty acid esters, synthetic hydrocarbons, and vegetable oil derivatives. Extreme pressure lubricants containing sulfurized or sulfonated derivatives of natural fatty acid products or petroleum-base hydrocarbons can be quite toxic to marine life and are rarely used for environmental reasons. Diesel and mineral oils were once used as lubricants at levels of 3 to 10 vol % but this practice has been curtailed significantly for environmental reasons. 

The main technical difference between Hquid and gas pipeline transport is the compressibiUty of the fluid being moved and the use of pumps, rather than compressors, to supply the pressure needed for transport. The primary use for Hquids pipelines is the transport of cmde oil and petroleum products. 

Porous Media Packed beds of granular solids are one type of the general class referred to as porous media, which include geological formations such as petroleum reservoirs and aquifers, manufactured materials such as sintered metals and porous catalysts, burning coal or char particles, and textile fabrics, to name a few. Pressure drop for incompressible flow across a porous medium has the same quahtative behavior as that given by Leva s correlation in the preceding. At low Reynolds numbers, viscous forces dominate and pressure drop is proportional to fluid viscosity and superficial velocity, and at high Reynolds numbers, pressure drop is proportional to fluid density and to the square of superficial velocity. 

Fixed-roof atmospheric tanks require vents to prevent pressure changes which would othei wise result from temperature changes and withdrawal or addition of liquid. API Standard 2000, Venting Atmospheric and Low Pressure Storage Tanks, gives practical rules for vent design. The principles of this standard can be applied to fluids other than petroleum products. Excessive losses of volatile liquids, particularly those with flash points below 38°C (100°F), may result from the use of open vents on fixed-roof tanks. Sometimes vents are manifolded and led to a vent tank, or the vapor may be extracted by a recov-eiy system.

Subsurface Fluid Pressure (Pore Pressure Gradient). The total overburden pressure is derived from the weight of the materials and fluids that lie above any particular depth level in the earth. Of interest to the petroleum industry are the sedimentary rocks derived from deposits in water, particularly, in seawater. Such sedimentary rocks contain rock particle grains and saline water within the pore spaces. Total theoretical maximum overburden pressure, P (Ib/ft-), is... 

Where high operating temperatures are required, high-temperature thermal fluid systems may be used instead of pressurized water or steam systems. These systems operate at atmospheric pressure using non-toxic media such as petroleum oil for temperatures up to 300°C or synthetic chemical mixtures where temperatures in excess of this are required (up to 400°C). Some advantages and disadvantages of thermal fluid or heat transfer oil systems are listed below. 

The difficulties encountered in the Chao-Seader correlation can, at least in part, be overcome by the somewhat different formulation recently developed by Chueh (C2, C3). In Chueh s equations, the partial molar volumes in the liquid phase are functions of composition and temperature, as indicated in Section IV further, the unsymmetric convention is used for the normalization of activity coefficients, thereby avoiding all arbitrary extrapolations to find the properties of hypothetical states finally, a flexible two-parameter model is used for describing the effect of composition and temperature on liquid-phase activity coefficients. The flexibility of the model necessarily requires some binary data over a range of composition and temperature to obtain the desired accuracy, especially in the critical region, more binary data are required for Chueh s method than for that of Chao and Seader (Cl). Fortunately, reliable data for high-pressure equilibria are now available for a variety of binary mixtures of nonpolar fluids, mostly hydrocarbons. Chueh s method, therefore, is primarily applicable to equilibrium problems encountered in the petroleum, natural-gas, and related industries. 

Adamantane and diamantane are usually the dominant diamondoids found in petroleum and natural gas pipeline deposits [74, 75]. This is because diamondoids are soluble in light hydrocarbons at high pressures and temperatures. Upon expansion of the petroleum fluid coming out of the underground reservoir and a drop in its temperature and pressure, diamondoids could deposit. 

Deposition of adamantane from petroleum streams is associated with phase transitions resulting from changes in temperature, pressure, and/or composition of reservoir fluid. Generally, these phase transitions result in a solid phase from a gas or a liquid petroleum fluid. Deposition problems are particularly cumbersome when the fluid stream is dry (i.e., low LPG content in the stream). Phase segregation of solids takes place when the fluid is cooled and/or depressurized. In a wet reservoir fluid (i.e., high LPG content in the stream) the diamondoids partition into the LPG-rich phase and the gas phase. Deposition of diamondoids from a wet reservoir fluid is not as problematic as in the case of dry streams [74, 75]. 

During the second period, the cake grows because of the absence of flow. It may grow to a point at which it locally but completely fills the annulus Bridging takes place and the hydrostatic pressure is no longer transmitted to the deeper zones. From the typical mudcake resistance it can be estimated that under both dynamic and static conditions, the fluid loss could require reduction to an American Petroleum Institutue (API) value lower than what is generally considered a fair control of fluid loss. 

Mineral Oil Hydraulic Fluids. No specific methods were located for interfering with the mechanism of action for toxic effects produced by mineral oil hydraulic fluids. Unstable alveoli and distal airways have been proposed as major factors in the respiratory symptoms that occur after the ingestion of other petroleum-derived materials. Continuous positive airway pressure or continuous negative chest wall pressure, as well as the application of supplemental oxygen, have been recommended to counteract the resultant pneumonitis (Eade et al. 1974 Klein and Simon 1986).
