Pressure applied

The flow can be radial, that is, in or out through a hole in the center of one of the plates [75] the relationship between E and f (Eq. V-46) is independent of geometry. As an example, a streaming potential of 8 mV was measured for 2-cm-radius mica disks (one with a 3-mm exit hole) under an applied pressure of 20 cm H2 on QT M KCl at 21°C [75]. The i potentials of mica measured from the streaming potential correspond well to those obtained from force balance measurements (see Section V-6 and Chapter VI) for some univalent electrolytes however, important discrepancies arise for some monovalent and all multivalent ions. The streaming potential results generally support a single-site dissociation model for mica with Oo, Uff, and at defined by the surface site equilibrium [76]. [Pg.188]

Using the curve given by the square points in Fig. XVI-2, make the qualitative reconstruction of the original data plot of volume of mercury penetrated per gram versus applied pressure. [Pg.592]

For example, the definition of a system as 10.0 g FI2O at 10.0°C at an applied pressure p= 1.00 atm is sufficient to specify that the water is liquid and that its other properties (energy, density, refractive index, even non-thennodynamic properties like the coefficients of viscosity and themial condnctivify) are uniquely fixed. [Pg.323]

Here we have expressed the stress as the sum of the (external) applied pressure PappUed together with a static pressure Pstatic- which arises from the internal forces acting on the uiiit cell. [Pg.311]

For more serious cuts, where bleeding is profuse, apply pressure with a thick sterile (or at least clean) pad, dressing, or towel over the area. If an arteiy is spurting, try to minimise bleeding by applying pressure immediately above and below the cut. [Pg.527]

If glass is still thought to be present in the cut, wash thoroughly before applying pressure. If bleeding is profuse, the application of pressure to prevent bleeding is more important than the removal of the glass. [Pg.527]

For serious cuts, send for a doctor at once meanwhile wash with a disinfectant and endeavour to check bleeding by applying pressure immediately above the cut. Continuous pressure should not be maintained for more than five minutes. [Pg.1132]

It has other peculiar properties. Helium is the only liquid that cannot be solidified by lowering the temperature. It remains liquid down to absolute zero at ordinary pressures, but it can readily be solidified by increasing the pressure. Solid 3He and 4He are unusual in that both can be changed in volume by more than 30% by applying pressure. [Pg.7]

In most inorganic chromatography, resins of 100 to 200 mesh size are suitable difficult separations may require 200 to 400 mesh resins. A flow rate of 1 mL cm min is often satisfactory. With HPEC columns, the flow rate in long columns of fine adsorbent can be increased by applying pressure. [Pg.1109]

Hysteresis, which is invariably present, adds to the complications its interpretation is, if anything more complex than with capillary condensation, inasmuch as it can depend not only on the pore structure of the solid but also on the magnitude of the applied pressure. [Pg.190]

Elastic-Element Methods Elastic-element pressure-measuring devices are those in which the measured pressure deforms some elastic material (usually metallic) within its elastic limit, the magnitude of the deformation being approximately proportional to the applied pressure. These devices may be loosely classified into three types Bourdon tube, bellows, and diaphragm. [Pg.761]

Bond [Min. Eng. (London), 60(1), 63-64 (1968)] reviewed attempts to induce breakage without wastefuUy applying pressure and concluded that inherent practical limitations have been found for the following methods spinning particles, resonant vibration, electro-hydrauhe crushing, induction heating, sudden release of gas pressure, and chisel-effect breakers. For a review of more recent efforts, see edition 6 of this handbook. [Pg.1866]

Transmission of Forces As pressure is applied to a powder in a die or roll press, various zones in the compact are subjected to differing intensities of pressure and shear. Compaction stress decreases with axial distance from the applied pressure [Strijbos et al.. Powder Tech., IS, 187 209 (1977)] due to frictional properties of the powder and die wall. For example, the axialpressure experienced within a cyhndrical die with an applied axial loaa Oq may be estimated to a first approximation by... [Pg.1889]

An account of the mechanism for creep in solids placed under a compressive hydrostatic suess which involves atom-vacancy diffusion only is considered in Nabano and Hemirg s (1950) volume diffusion model. The counter-movement of atoms and vacancies tends to relieve the effects of applied pressure, causing extension normal to the applied sU ess, and sluinkage in the direction of the applied sU ess, as might be anticipated from Le Chatelier s principle. The opposite movement occurs in the case of a tensile sU ess. The analysis yields the relationship... [Pg.181]

Freeing a solution from extremely small particles [e.g. for optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) or circular dichroism (CD) measurements] requires filters with very small pore size. Commercially available (Millipore, Gelman, Nucleopore) filters other than cellulose or glass include nylon, Teflon, and polyvinyl chloride, and the pore diameter may be as small as 0.01 micron (see Table 6). Special containers are used to hold the filters, through which the solution is pressed by applying pressure, e.g. from a syringe. Some of these filters can be used to clear strong sulfuric acid solutions. [Pg.15]

Shoek-indueed phase transformations are often represented in terms of the mass fraetion w of the initial phase. Currently, the reaetion rate vv is treated as simply a funetion of w and the applied pressure. Displaeive transitions are likely to be a funetion of erystal orientation and the applied shear stress also, but we do not eurrently know how to represent this funetional dependenee. [Pg.220]

It is important to use rigid glass sheet and to apply pressure to the plates in such a manner that they do not bow out as this would lead to sheet of uneven thickness. [Pg.403]
