Polysorbate 80 occurs as a yellow to orange colored, oily liquid. It is a mixture of oleate partial esters of sorbitol and sorbitol anhydrides condensed with approximately 20 moles of ethylene oxide (C2H40) for each mole of sorbitol and its mono- and dianhydrides. It is very soluble in water, producing a nearly colorless solution, and it is soluble in alcohol, in fixed oils, in ethyl acetate, and in toluene. It is insoluble in mineral oil. [Pg.349]

In situ product separation by distillation offers applications in esterification (e.g., for ethyl acetate), trans-esterification (e.g., for butyl acetate), hydrolysis (e.g., for ethylene glycol, isopropyl alcohol), metathesis (e.g., for methyl oleate), etherification (e.g., for MTBE, ETBE, TAME), and alkylation reactions (e.g., for cumene). [Pg.231]

Transesterification. Six to 30 moles of methyl or ethyl acetate, methyl caprinate, laurate, oleate, stearate or methacrylate was added to a DMF solution of one mole of sucrose chelate. The reaction mixtures were allowed to stand 3 h at 100° or 120°C and analyzed. [Pg.64]

Marqueyrol and Florentin point out that the lower members of the series of esters, the acetates, butyrates, valerates, etc., are good solvents for nitrocellulose—ethyl and amyl acetate have long been used for the purpose—but the higher members, the stearates and oleates, gelatinize nitrocellulose but very little. To the esters of the dibasic acids the opposite rule appears to apply the higher members are better than the lower. Acetone is a well-known solvent both for soluble and for insoluble nitrocellulose, but acetophenone gelatinizes even soluble nitrocellulose only feebly. [Pg.321]

Soluble substances like iodine also act as emulsifiers, in the case of ether/water emulsions. Some mixed stabilising agents also act as emulsifiers, e.g., ethyl alcohol and lycopodium powder, acetic acid and lamp black, clay and sodium oleate etc. [Pg.192]

Such catalysts include potassium acetate, sodium benzoate, certain basic inorganic salts (IS, 21, 22), lead oleate and other lead salts (23), alkali soaps (23), and metal naphthenates (2Ji). Also at 125°, trimers of phenyl isocyanate form in high yield catalyzed by A-methylmorpholine in the presence of ethyl alcohol (26). Epoxides have been reported to be active for trimerization in the presence of a small amount of amine (26, 27). Ethylene carbonate also is effective in production of trimer (28).
