1.2- Butylene glycol

Dihydroxybutane. -butylene glycol, CH3CH(0H)CH2CH20H, b.p. 204°C. Manufactured by reduction of aldol or by the action of yeast on aldol. Used to prepare butadiene. Used in brake fluids, in gelling agents and as an intermediate in plasticizers. [Pg.72]

Butanediol. 1,4-Butanediol [110-63-4] tetramethylene glycol, 1,4-butylene glycol, was first prepared in 1890 by acid hydrolysis of N,]S3-dinitro-l,4-butanediamine (117). Other early preparations were by reduction of succinaldehyde (118) or succinic esters (119) and by saponification of the diacetate prepared from 1,4-dihalobutanes (120). Catalytic hydrogenation of butynediol, now the principal commercial route, was first described in 1910 (121). Other processes used for commercial manufacture are described in the section on Manufacture. Physical properties of butanediol are Hsted in Table 2. [Pg.108]

Solvents. The most widely used solvent is deionized water primarily because it is cheap and readily available. Other solvents include ethanol, propjdene glycol or butylene glycol, sorbitol, and ethoxylated nonionic surfactants. There is a trend in styling products toward alcohol-free formulas. This may have consumer appeal, but limits the formulator to using water-soluble polymers, and requires additional solvents to solubilize the fragrance and higher levels of preservatives. [Pg.453]

Butylene oxide may be hydrolyzed to butylene glycol, which is used to make plasticizers. 1,2-Butylene oxide is a stabilizer for chlorinated solvents and also an intermediate in organic synthesis such as in surfactants and pharmaceuticals. [Pg.245]

Propylene glycol and butylene glycol are often used as humectants (moisturizers) as they are hygroscopic (they draw moisture from the air). [Pg.43]

Butylene glycol is sometimes used as a humectant (moisturizer) and preservative if the spray contains food items such as vitamins and proteins. It also helps products to retain their scents. [Pg.235]
