Control of feedstock

Typical applications at Polysar included the quantification of residual solvents and monomers in finished rubber products (e.g. styrene in SBR), quality control of feedstocks such as benzene or ethyl benzene as impurities in styrene monomer, and the analysis of samples collected from environmental monitoring programs. [Pg.37]

Material and product data Data include specifications of feedstock, process water, product and byproducts with composition, instruction on usage and discharge, material safety data sheets, and usable and storage life. Information on quality assurance and quality control of feedstock, process water, products, and byproducts must also be collected. [Pg.140]

A feedstock specification or product specification provides the data that give adequate control of feedstock behavior in a refinery or product quality. Thus a specification offers the luxury of predictability of feedstock behavior in a refinery or predictability of product quahty (therefore, product behavior) relative to market demand. Ultimately, feedstock behavior and/or product quality is judged by an assessment of performance. And it is performance that is the ultimate criterion of quality. It is therefore necessary to determine those properties, the values of which can be established precisely and relatively simply by inspection tests in a control laboratory, that correlate closely with the important performance properties. [Pg.16]

Specification the data that give adequate control of feedstock behavior or product quality. [Pg.385]

Other classes of polyol surfactants have as their starting materials polyhydroxy compounds with 2-6 hydroxyl units per chain. Those hydrophilic groups include sugars, ethylene and propylene glycol, and other related materials. The surfactants are usually prepared by the esterification of fatty acids with the desired polyol, normally resulting in the formation of mixtures of mono-, di-, and often polyalkyl esters. The commercial products, therefore, may be complex mixtures of compounds whose final properties must be determined by the careful control of feedstock composition and reaction conditions. Relatively pure monoglyceride esters (>90% ot-mono) may be obtained by molecular distillation. Distilled monoesters of propylene glycol are also important in the food industry. [Pg.72]

Polymerization Exothermic reaction which, unless carefully controlled, can run-away and create a thermal explosion or vessel overpressurization Refer to Table 7.20 for common monomers Certain processes require polymerization of feedstock at high pressure, with associated hazards Many vinyl monomers (e.g. vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile) pose a chronic toxicity hazard Refer to Table 7.19 for basic precautions... [Pg.249]

Manufacturers need to have confidence that a continual uninterrupted supply of raw material can be sustained throughout the life cycle of a product. It is of equal importance that the feedstock should not be restricted by geographical and climatic conditions or that yield does not dramatically vary when harvested in different locations and at a particular time of the year. The key to an increased usage of natural products by industry is in the control of the above variables so that the end performance of the product remains consistent. [Pg.1069]

Catalytic crackings operations have been simulated by mathematical models, with the aid of computers. The computer programs are the end result of a very extensive research effort in pilot and bench scale units. Many sets of calculations are carried out to optimize design of new units, operation of existing plants, choice of feedstocks, and other variables subject to control. A background knowledge of the correlations used in the "black box" helps to make such studies more effective. [Pg.17]

This report addresses ammonia plant shutdowns over the listed time period in 40 countries. It provides a basis for comparing plant performance area by area leading to better control of reliability efforts while reducing maintenance and unplanned shutdown costs. Data are presented for shutdowns due to power, equipment, instrumentation, feedstock and product inventory control. [Pg.47]

The cat cracker plays a key role in the overall profitability of the refinery. It must operate reliably and efficiently. It must also operate safely and comply with federal, state, and local environmental requirements. A typical FCC unit circulates tons of catalyst per minute, processes various types of feedstock and uses hundreds of control loops, any of which can make operation difficult. Proper troubleshooting will ensure that the unit operates at maximum reliability and efficiency while complying with environmental concerns. [Pg.234]

Despite their flaws, batch processes have stood the test of time for a number of reasons, the most important of which is the flexibihty it brings to the manufacturer in terms of the range of products that the plant can produce, the feedstocks used to produce them, and the speed at which they can be brought to market with very limited information on physical properties, reaction kinetics, and so on (very few, if any, Michelin-starred chefs have ever measured the rheology or kinetics of their latest culinary creation). This flexibility, however, has a price which comes in the form of lower efficiencies in terms of production, energy, labor, and so on, and ultimately efficiency equates to cost However, one should never underestimate the pull of flexibility particularly, as discussed earlier in the examples of fermentation, where control of important parameters is difficult to achieve. [Pg.314]

We shall deal in this lecture with recent improvements in the elastomers synthesis, that should be able to cope with the above mentioned requirements, without resorting to important investments for new plants or to cumbersome feedstocks. The improvement of the elastomer synthesis relies upon new catalytic systems that allow a control of elastomer tacticity in order to achieve a strain induced crystallization, and suitable monomer combinations in order to minimize the hysteresis loss of the elastomer in a wide range of temperatures and frequencies. [Pg.33]

Non-destructive analysis is especially valuable in an on line situation. X-ray fluorescence has above all become of major importance for the analysis of inorganic process streams. Cement production is an example of the successful application of this technique. The X-ray analyser can be used for the simultaneous assay of the various feedstocks (iron ore, clay and limestone) for Fe203, A1203, Si02 and CaO. In turn the signals from the analyser are used to control the feedstock supplies to the blending mill and to maintain an optimum product composition. [Pg.521]

Physical separation of the chlor-alkali/EDC plant from the cracking/oxyhydro-chlorination plant does create some complications regarding the necessary duplication of feedstocks and services. In particular, there will be the need for two ethylene supplies and for two independent thermal oxidation systems. Approximately half of the total ethylene must be provided as the feed to the EDC unit with the remainder fed to the oxyhydrochlorination unit. The EDC unit as well as the cracking and oxyhydrochlorination units will generate off-gases that require emission control,... [Pg.283]

The facts in a knowledge base include descriptions of objects, their attributes and corresponding data values, in the area to which the expert system is to be applied. In a process control application, for example, the factual knowledge might include a description of a physical plant or a portion thereof, characteristics of individual components, values from sensor data, composition of feedstocks and so forth. [Pg.5]

Formation of a broad range of materials with a wide variety of general or specific properties and function (such as proteins and enzymes) through a controlled sequence assembly from a fixed number of feedstock molecules (proteins about 20 different amino acids, five bases for nucleic acids, and two sugar units)... [Pg.301]

While each of the above technologies offers certain unique advantages, those common to ceramic immobilization include a relative ease in fabrication, a high capacity for actinides or heavy metals compared to other technologies, the capacity for flexibility of feedstock, the ability to add neutron absorber materials for nuclear waste applications, and the ability to control the properties of the final waste form. [Pg.448]
