Since the early 1980s olefin plants in the United States were designed to have substantial flexibiHty to consume a wide range of feedstocks. Most of the flexibiHty to use various feedstocks is found in plants with associated refineries, where integrated olefins plants can optimize feedstocks using either gas Hquids or heavier refinery streams. Companies whose primary business is the production of ethylene derivatives, such as thermoplastics, tend to use ethane and propane feedstocks which minimize by-product streams and maximize ethylene production for their derivative plants. [Pg.171]

The market penetration of synthetic fuels from biomass and wastes in the United States depends on several basic factors, eg, demand, price, performance, competitive feedstock uses, government incentives, whether estabUshed fuel is replaced by a chemically identical fuel or a different product, and cost and availabiUty of other fuels such as oil and natural gas. Detailed analyses have been performed to predict the market penetration of biomass energy well into the twenty-first century. A range of from 3 to about 21 EJ seems to characterize the results of most of these studies. [Pg.13]

Friedel-Crafts (Lewis) acids have been shown to be much more effective in the initiation of cationic polymerization when in the presence of a cocatalyst such as water, alkyl haUdes, and protic acids. Virtually all feedstocks used in the synthesis of hydrocarbon resins contain at least traces of water, which serves as a cocatalyst. The accepted mechanism for the activation of boron trifluoride in the presence of water is shown in equation 1 (10). Other Lewis acids are activated by similar mechanisms. In a more general sense, water may be replaced by any appropriate electron-donating species (eg, ether, alcohol, alkyl haUde) to generate a cationic intermediate and a Lewis acid complex counterion. [Pg.351]

The feedstocks used ia the production of petroleum resias are obtaiaed mainly from the low pressure vapor-phase cracking (steam cracking) and subsequent fractionation of petroleum distillates ranging from light naphthas to gas oil fractions, which typically boil ia the 20—450°C range (16). Obtaiaed from this process are feedstreams composed of atiphatic, aromatic, and cycloatiphatic olefins and diolefins, which are subsequently polymerized to yield resias of various compositioas and physical properties. Typically, feedstocks are divided iato atiphatic, cycloatiphatic, and aromatic streams. Table 2 illustrates the predominant olefinic hydrocarbons obtained from steam cracking processes for petroleum resia synthesis (18). [Pg.352]

Synthesis Gas Preparation Processes. Synthesis gas for ammonia production consists of hydrogen and nitrogen in about a three to one mole ratio, residual methane, argon introduced with the process air, and traces of carbon oxides. There are several processes available for synthesis gas generation and each is characterized by the specific feedstock used. A typical synthesis gas composition by volume is hydrogen, 73.65% nitrogen, 24.55% methane, <1 ppm-0.8% argon, 100 ppm—0.34% carbon oxides, 2—10 ppm and water vapor, 0.1 ppm. [Pg.340]

The ethylene feedstock used in most plants is of high purity and contains 200—2000 ppm of ethane as the only significant impurity. Ethane is inert in the reactor and is rejected from the plant in the vent gas for use as fuel. Dilute gas streams, such as treated fluid-catalytic cracking (FCC) off-gas from refineries with ethylene concentrations as low as 10%, have also been used as the ethylene feedstock. The refinery FCC off-gas, which is otherwise used as fuel, can be an attractive source of ethylene even with the added costs of the treatments needed to remove undesirable impurities such as acetylene and higher olefins. Its use for ethylbenzene production, however, is limited by the quantity available. Only large refineries are capable of deUvering sufficient FCC off-gas to support an ethylbenzene—styrene plant of an economical scale. [Pg.478]

Economic considerations in the 1990s favor recovering butadiene from by-products in the manufacture of ethylene. Butadiene is a by-product in the C4 streams from the cracking process. Depending on the feedstocks used in the production of ethylene, the yield of butadiene varies. Eor use in polymerization, the butadiene must be purified to 994-%. Cmde butadiene is separated from C and C components by distillation. Separation of butadiene from other C constituents is accomplished by salt complexing/solvent extraction. Among the solvents used commercially are acetonitrile, dimethyl acetamide, dimethylform amide, and /V-methylpyrrolidinone (13). Based on the available cmde C streams, the worldwide forecasted production is as follows 1995, 6,712,000 1996, 6,939,000 1997, 7,166,000 and 1998, 7,483,000 metric tons (14). As of January 1996, the 1995 actual total was 6,637,000 t. [Pg.494]

Toluene, Benzene, and BTX Reeoveiy. The composition of aromatics centers on the C - and Cg-fraction, depending somewhat on the boihng range of the feedstock used. Most catalytic reformate is used directiy in gasoline. That part which is converted to benzene, toluene, and xylenes for commercial sale is separated from the unreacted paraffins and cycloparaffins or naphthenes by hquid—hquid extraction or by extractive distillation. It is impossible to separate commercial purity aromatic products from reformates by distillation only because of the presence of azeotropes, although comphcated further by the closeness in boihng points of the aromatics, t/o-paraffin, and unreacted C -, C -, and Cg-paraffins. [Pg.179]

The principal sources of feedstocks in the United States are the decant oils from petroleum refining operations. These are clarified heavy distillates from the catalytic cracking of gas oils. About 95% of U.S. feedstock use is decant oil. Another source of feedstock is ethylene process tars obtained as the heavy byproducts from the production of ethylene by steam cracking of alkanes, naphthas, and gas oils. There is a wide use of these feedstocks in European production. European and Asian operations also use significant quantities of coal tars, creosote oils, and anthracene oils, the distillates from the high temperature coking of coal. European feedstock sources are 50% decant oils and 50% ethylene tars and creosote oils. [Pg.544]

The principal feedstocks used today are the normal paraffin fractions CIO—C13, C12—C14, C14—C17, and C18—C20 together with paraffin wax fractions of C24—C30, precise compositions may vary depending on petroleum oil source. As one would expect, in those cases in which the ionic liquid acts as a co-catalyst, the nature of the ionic liquid becomes very important for the reactivity of the transition metal complex. The opportunity to optimize the ionic medium used, by variation of the halide salt, the Lewis acid, and the ratio of the two components forming the ionic liquid, opens up enormous potential for optimization. However, the choice of these parameters may be restricted by some possible incompatibilities with the feedstock used. Despite their flaws, batch processes have stood the test of time for a number of reasons, the most important of which is the flexibihty it brings to the manufacturer in terms of the range of products that the plant can produce, the feedstocks used to produce them, and the speed at which they can be brought to market with very limited information on physical properties, reaction kinetics, and so on (very few, if any, Michelin-starred chefs have ever measured the rheology or kinetics of their latest culinary creation).
