Table 1 lists important databases that include information on chemical engineering both on literature references and on properties of substances. Databases that include information on properties of materials and corrosion are not listed. Online availability is used regardless of the type of connection internet or online host. Online Connections. One highly reHable telecommunications network is DIALNET, offered by DIALOG. DIALNET offers dial-up access from over 50 principal U.S. cities at 300, 1200, 2400, and higher baud rates to 9600. Other networks for users in the United States and Canada include SprintNet or TYMNET networks. INWATS and INTERNET access is also available. In other countries, timeshare telecommunications access is available through the local PTT rates vary from country to country. Access is also available through services such as TWX, international telex, outward WATS or ETS for these services, the user bears the communication charges directly (4). 

The World Wide Web has transformed the way in which we obtain and analyze published information on proteins. What only a few years ago would take days or weeks and require the use of expensive computer workstations can now be achieved in a few minutes or hours using personal computers, both PCs and Macintosh, connected to the internet. The Web contains hundreds of sites of Interest to molecular biologists, many of which are listed in Pedro s BioMolecular Research Tools (http // www.fmi.ch/biology/research tools.html). Many sites provide free access to databases that make it very easy to obtain information on structurally related proteins, the amino acid sequences of homologous proteins, relevant literature references, medical information and metabolic pathways. This development has opened up new opportunities for even non-specialists to view and manipulate a structure of interest or to carry out amino-acid sequence comparisons, and one can now rapidly obtain an overview of a particular area of molecular biology. We shall here describe some Web sites that are of interest from a structural point of view. Easy access from any Internet-connected computer via a standard Web browser. 

The second type is the WAN (wide area network) installation. In this setup the LIMS take advantage of telecommunication technology to cover a great distance. The setup can also be used to connect disparate LANs together. In this configuration, the LIMS are installed on both the clients and a central server. The third type is the so-called centrally hosted thin client installation . For this setup, system administration is managed at a corporate center, where the LIMS are hosted and distributed via a WAN or the Internet with a virtual private network (VPN). The last and also the newest type is the ASP (Application Service Provision provider)-hosted installation. In this setup, the LIMS are hosted on a centrally managed server form and maintained by third-party specialists. Users access the LIMS with any Internet-connected PC with a standard Web browser. 

In contrast, an Internet-based connection (as with CU-SeeMe) has to share bandwidth with other Internet data, which may cause audio clipping or delays as well as jerky video [14]. 

In web-based application models that use web browsers to display information sent by the application server, the largest part of the data management applications reside on the server. File Transfer Protocol. A protocol used to move files over the Internet. Typically, you use a command line command, browser capability, or program on your computer called an FTP client to connect to an FTP server found on the Internet. Once connected to the FTP server, you can move files back and forth between your computer and the FTP server. SFTP, Secure FTP, is a more secure protocol for moving data over the Internet in which both your login information and data are encrypted during communications.

To provide easy access to the central-service center, fiber-glass data-lines will be installed together with the other supply lines from the outset. These data lines will also provide individual maximum-speed internet connections for all households. 

As compared with today s so called Internetcommunities , which rely on regular internet data transfer to the owner, the eBuilding concept is one of linking the houses and all connected appliances directly to the central-service center. Since the SCADA systems sensors provided valuable information, many utilities and other industries established connections between their SCADA systems and their business system. This allowed utility/industrial management and other staff access to valuable statistics, such as chemical usage. When utilities/industries later connected their systems to the Internet, they were able to provide stakeholders/stockholders with usage statistics on the utility/industrial web pages. Figure 7.1 provides a basic illustration of a representative SCADA network. Note that firewall protection (see chapter 9) would normally be placed between the Internet and the business system and between the business system and the MTU.

Fourteen Cabinet servers were deployed on the Internet (WWW) over a dedicated 2x2 GHz 4 GB G5DP over a corporate T1 connection.
