In the past, hazardous wastes were often grouped into the following categories (1) radioactive substances, (2) chemicals, (3) biological wastes, (4) flammable wastes, and (5) explosives. The chemical cate-goiy included wastes that were corrosive, reactive, and toxic. The principal sources of hazardous biological wastes are hospitals and biological-research facilities. [Pg.2232]

The World Wide Web has transformed the way in which we obtain and analyze published information on proteins. What only a few years ago would take days or weeks and require the use of expensive computer workstations can now be achieved in a few minutes or hours using personal computers, both PCs and Macintosh, connected to the internet. The Web contains hundreds of sites of Interest to molecular biologists, many of which are listed in Pedro s BioMolecular Research Tools (http // www.fmi.ch/biology/research tools.html). Many sites provide free access to databases that make it very easy to obtain information on structurally related proteins, the amino acid sequences of homologous proteins, relevant literature references, medical information and metabolic pathways. This development has opened up new opportunities for even non-specialists to view and manipulate a structure of interest or to carry out amino-acid sequence comparisons, and one can now rapidly obtain an overview of a particular area of molecular biology. We shall here describe some Web sites that are of interest from a structural point of view. Updated links to these sites can be found in the Introduction to Protein Structure Web site (http // WWW.ProteinStructure.com/). [Pg.393]

Leukotriene B4, formed by enzymic hydrolysis of LTA4, is chemotactic for macrophages and neutrophils at concentrations as low as 1 ng/ml. The stereochemistry of the conjugated triene subunit was established by synthesis which also made LTB4 available in quantity for biological research. [Pg.320]

The 2(lH)-pyrazinone system has received increased interest in the past two decades by both synthetic and biological research, due to its presence in a variety of natural and non-natural products as well as pharmacologically active compounds. The easy and diverse methods for the generation of this versatile scaffold make it a prime choice for the current pharmaceutical research hke thrombin inhibitors, substance P antagonists, etc. The rich 1,4-azadiene... [Pg.300]

The United States occupies the preeminent scientific position in the "new" biology. If America is to derive the maximum benefit of its investment in basic biological research—whether in the form of better health, improved agriculture, a cleaner environment, or more efficient production of chemicals—it must also assume a preeminent position in biochemical and biomedical engineering. This can be accomplished by carrying out generic research in the following areas ... [Pg.15]

The half-life of the 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin in isooctane was estimated to be 40 min for the 0.5 meter exposure and 3 hours for the one meter exposure. The half-life in 1-octanol was essentially the same. The 24-hour photolysis products of the 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin were examined by gas chromatography. The smallest concentration of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin that could be detected by the instrument was 0.5 ppm. When an injection of the 24-hour photolysis product was made, no tetra was detected. An additional confirmation of the disappearance of the 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin in the 24-hour photolysis products was obtained when thej yiaterial was submitted to the Chemical-Biology Research Laboratory for rabbit testing. No chloracnegenic activity was indicated. ... [Pg.123]

These are just some of the ways in which calorimetry is used in contemporary biological research. Our examples highlight studies at the cellular level, but ecologists also use calorimetry to explore the energy balances In ecosystems, and whole-organism biologists have found ways to carry out calorimetric measurements on fish, birds, reptiles, and mammals. Including humans. [Pg.396]
