Easy access from any Internet-connected computer via a standard Web browser. 

The second type is the WAN (wide area network) installation. In this setup the LIMS take advantage of telecommunication technology to cover a great distance. The setup can also be used to connect disparate LANs together. In this configuration, the LIMS are installed on both the clients and a central server. The third type is the so-called centrally hosted thin client installation . In this setup, the LIMS are hosted on a centrally managed server form and maintained by third-party specialists. Users access the LIMS with any Internet-connected PC with a standard Web browser.

If your computer at work is on a local area network (LAN), you may already have access to an external connection. Almost all universities have permanent connections between their internal systems and the Internet. If you don t have access to an institutional connection, you have to obtain an access from an Internet service provider (ISP). For a full Internet connection, you must have software to make your computer use the Internet protocol, TCP/IP, and if your connection is through a modem this software will probably use PPP (point to point protocol). 

The Internet, heard about almost everywhere in print and media over the past year, is actually a simple concept. There are many computers in the world. If all of the computers in your company are connected together, you have a network. If all of these networks around the world are connected, you have a very big network. This is the Internet. Because a company pays only for its connection to the Internet, the need for high cost private networks begins to disappear. An office in New York can communicate with the Los Angeles office for the price of two local Internet connections. 

Usage of URLs causes some problems that do not stem from technical limitations but from human misunderstandings. Inexperienced users often believe that if something looks like a URL, it needs to be connected with the Internet. They express concerns about the necessity of Internet connection for XML processing and are surprised that attempts to visit a page with addresses given in namespaces often fail.

During the upgrade, Setup will try to contact Microsoft s site for information and updates, including the upgrade packs it s looking for on the next page of the wizard. The majority of home Internet connections use POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) and a modem. Most ISPs connect with each other using phone lines of T1 speeds (1.554Mbps) or faster. Certain ISPs that make up the backbone of the Internet use technologies like SONET that can get the data moving at gigabit speeds. 

Now that you have a DUN connection, you need to configure the settings specific to your Internet connection. Simply right-click the connection in the Dial-Up Networking folder (Figure 18.28). From the menu that appears, you can choose to use the connection to connect (the Connect option), or you can choose the Properties option to configure it. Because you aren t ready to connect yet, choose the Properties item from the menu. 

You can also configure DUN parameters in the Connect screen of the Internet connection. To access this area, double-click the connection. You will see a screen similar to the one in Figure 18.31. In this screen, you enter the username and password that your ISP has assigned you. Additionally, double-check the phone number you entered to make sure it s correct. Once you ve finished configuring the phone number, you re ready to connect to the Internet. 

In the Network Connection Wizard, choose Dial Up to the Internet and the Welcome to the Internet Connection Wizard (ICW) window appears (Figure 18.32). That makes three nested wizards. A bit extreme, no ...
