For ultrafiltration appHcations, hollow-fine fibers have never been seriously considered because of their susceptibiUty to fouling. If the feed solution is extremely fouling, tubular or plate-and-frame systems ate still used. Recentiy, however, spiral-wound modules with improved resistance to fouling have been developed, and these modules are increasingly displacing the more expensive plate-and-frame and tubular systems. Capillary systems are also used in some ultrafiltration appHcations. [Pg.75]

Water has the highest surface tension (75 dyne/cm) of ail common liquids (except mercury). Together, surface tension and density determine how high a liquid rises in a capillary system. Capillary movement of water plays a prominent role in the life of plants. Lastly, consider osmosis, the bulk movement of water in the direction from a dilute aqueous solution to a more concentrated one across a semipermeable boundary. A capillary system is said to be in a steady-state equilibrium position when the capillary forces are equal to the hydrostatic pressure force (Levich 1962). The heating of the capillary walls leads to a disturbance of the equilibrium and to a displacement of the meniscus, causing the liquid-vapor interface location to change as compared to an unheated wall. This process causes pressure differences due to capillarity and the hydrostatic pressures exiting the flow, which in turn causes the meniscus to return to the initial position. In order to realize the above-mentioned process in a continuous manner it is necessary to carry out continual heat transfer from the capillary walls to the liquid. In this case the position of the interface surface is invariable and the fluid flow is stationary. From the thermodynamical point of view the process in a heated capillary is similar to a process in a heat engine, which transforms heat into mechanical energy. [Pg.351]

SFC has received attention as an alternative separation technique to liquid and gas chromatography. The coupling of SFC to plasma detectors has been studied because plasma source spectrometry meets a number of requirements for suitable detection. There have been two main approaches in designing interfaces. The first is the use of a restrictor tube in a heated cross-flow nebuliser. This was designed for packed columns. For a capillary system, a restrictor was introduced into the central channel of the ICP torch. The restrictor was heated to overcome the eluent freezing upon decompression as it left the restrictor. The interface and transfer lines were also heated to maintain supercritical conditions. Several speciation applications have been reported in which SFC-ICP-MS was used. These include alkyl tin compounds (Oudsema and Poole, 1992), chromium (Carey et al., 1994), lead and mercury (Carey et al., 1992), and arsenic (Kumar et al., 1995). Detection limits for trimethylarsine, triphenylarsine and triphenyl arsenic oxide were in the range of 0.4-5 pg. [Pg.412]
