Applicability Surface encapsulation (macroencapsulation) is appropriate for both organic and inorganic wastes. [Pg.184]

In conclusion, the surface modified natural graphite has good performance in PC based electrolyte and also meets the power requirements for hybrid electrical vehicle applications. Surface carbon coated natural graphite SLC1015 is a very promising material in high power Li-ion batteries with lower cost, reasonable safety, and low irreversible capacity. [Pg.307]

To demonstrate the unique advantages of the CBNL structure, we focus on two applications surface emitting lasers (SEL) and biochemical sensing. [Pg.330]

Muscle tremors and convulsions are characteristic effects of acute dermal phenol toxicity in laboratory animals. Tremors that developed into convulsions and prostration were reported in rats exposed to 107.1 mg/kg liquid phenol application surface areas were not reported (Conning and Hayes 1970). In pigs, application of 500 mg/kg over 35-40% of the body surface (0.44 mg/cm2/kg) resulted in muscular tremors in the head region within 3-5 minutes of exposure (Pullin et al. 1978). This was followed by dilation of the pupils, loss of coordination, and excess salivation and nasal discharge within 5 minutes of exposure. It was followed by convulsions, coma, and death 5-7 minutes after exposure in two of three pigs. Direct application of a dose of 37.5 mg/kg phenol to the inner ear resulted in a reduced threshold for auditory brainstem response (Schmidt et al. 1990). [Pg.90]

The effect of phenol on benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) carcinogenicity has been examined (Van Duuren and Goldschmidt 1976 Van Duuren et al. 1971, 1973). Dermal application of 3 mg phenol in acetone simultaneously with 5 g B[a]P resulted in significantly fewer tumors than application of B[a]P alone. Application surface areas were not reported and could not be estimated from the description of the application procedure. Mice treated dermally with B[a]P followed by dermal application of brewed tea on alternate days over a period of 55 days developed epithelial cell carcinoma or exhibited various stages of squamous cell tumors (Kaiser 1967). The brewed tea contained an unspecified level of phenol, the presumed cancer promoter in this experiment, as well as cresols and dimethylphenols. [Pg.92]

X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). This technique is also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), and as this name implies, it is a surface analytical technique. At present it is probably the most versatile and generally applicable surface spectroscopic technique. It is called XPS because of the type of beam used to study the interfacial region, that is, X-rays. These X-rays consist of monochromatic radiation—radiation of a given energy—emitted by a metal target bombarded by an electron beam of several kiloelectron volts of kinetic energy... [Pg.77]

The silanization process has also been employed to permit tailoring, for various applications, surfaces such as kaolin clays, Wollastonite, talc, and sodium aluminum silicate with amino, epoxy, mercapto, methacryloxy and vinyl groups. [Pg.289]

Surface properties (such as topography and wettability) of bioceramics similar to human bone can be obtained by decreasing the grain size of ceramic formulations into the nanometer regime. Such surface properties must be incorporated into proactive bioceramics for orthopedic and dental applications surface properties similar to those of physiological bone are needed in order to promote select cell interactions that lead to sufficient osseointegration between an orthopedic or... [Pg.159]

Excipients can influence delivery from topical and transdermal medications. The propensity of the drug to migrate from the formulation to the application surface is affected by factors such as lipophilicity of the vehicle, drug solubility in the formulation, and effects of additives on the barrier properties of the skin or mucosal surface. [Pg.1610]

Items such as material storage, handling and application, surface preparation, mil thickness tests, environmental conditions, surface defects in the coating film and coating adhesion are all checked and recorded. Inspectors have the authority to halt work not being performed properly, and they can reject completed work that does not meet the requirements of the specification. [Pg.343]
