Complete Works

Many computational chemistry techniques are extremely computer-intensive. Depending on the type of calculation desired, it could take anywhere from seconds to weeks to do a single calculation. There are many calculations, such as ah initio analysis of biomolecules, that cannot be done on the largest computers in existence. Likewise, calculations can take very large amounts of computer memory and hard disk space. In order to complete work in a reasonable amount of time, it is necessary to understand what factors contribute to the computer resource requirements. Ideally, the user should be able to predict in advance how much computing power will be needed. 

Heterocyclic chemistry is of the utmost practical and theoretical importance. Heterocyclic compounds are in use as pharmaceuticals, dyes, pesticides, herbicides, plastics, and for many other purposes the industries producing and researching into these products provide employment for a large fraction of all chemists. On the theoretical side, heterocyclic chemistry has provided a host of interesting concepts and structures. Yet, the subject is often deprived of the importance it deserves it is said that it is possible to complete work at graduate schools of some universities without having attended a lecture course dealing specifically with heterocyclic chemistry. 

Furthermore, it is generally difficult to deduce from examination of the completed work what has occurred previously. 

The work dockets would be normally issued on Fridays for the following week. This enables the technician/craftsman to plan his work for the forthcoming week. All completed work dockets should be returned to the engineer s office daily. 

Completed work plans and any signed-off work orders should be submitted by the supervisor to their respective maintenance supervisor no later than the day after the job is completed. The maintenance supervisor should examine these documents for completeness and accuracy. 

If the work as called for on the work order is not completed due to lack of insulation, clean-up, tie-ins only being made, etc., but the shutdown portion of the work has been completed, then the first copy of the work order should be retained by the supervisor. The supervisor should then return the work plan to his supervisor denoting the reason for not completing work, explanation of variance, etc. The planning office will prepare a list of incomplete work following the shutdown and forward this list and a copy of the work orders to the appropriate maintenance supervisor for follow-up. 

The exact mechanism has still not been completely worked out. Opinions have been expressed that it is completely intermolecular, completely intramolecular, and partially inter- and intramolecular. " One way to decide between inter- and intramolecular processes is to run the reaction of the phenolic ester in the presence of another aromatic compound, say, toluene. If some of the toluene is acylated, the reaction must be, at least in part, interraolecular. If the toluene is not acylated, the presumption is that the reaction is intramolecular, though this is not certain, for it may be that the toluene is not attacked because it is less active than the other. A number of such experiments (called crossover experiments) have been carried out sometimes crossover products have been found and sometimes not. As in 11-14, an initial complex (40) is formed between the substrate and the catalyst, so that a catalyst/substrate molar ratio of at least 1 1 is required. 

Up to now (1971) only a limited number of reaction series have been completely worked out in our laboratories along the lines outlined in Sec. IV. In fact, there are rather few examples in the literature with a sufficient number of data, accuracy, and temperature range to be worth a thorough statistical treatment. Hence, the examples collected in Table III are mostly from recent experimental work and the previous ones (1) have been reexamined. When evaluating the results, the main attention should be paid to the question as to whether or not the isokinetic relationship holds i.e., to the comparison of standard deviations of So and Sqo The isokinetic temperature /J is viewed as a mere formal quantity and is given no confidence interval. Comparison with previous treatments is mostly restricted to this value, which has generally and improperly been given too much atention.
