Deep compaction processes begin with field investigations which delineate the zones where improvement is desirable, and possibly indicate the degree of improvement needed as well as means to measure improvement. Environmental and economic factors then determine the type of equipment and process to be used. Expert witnesses will inevitably present their reports in different formats. Nevertheless, there are key areas that all experts will address in a systematic way. An example of the key areas are identified in Figure 1.3. It is important to emphasise the need for the report to be impartial and independent, as an expert is providing an opinion based on the facts available. If the evidence presented to expert witnesses is limited, or inconclusive, then it is not unusual for them to request additional information. This might include school policy documents, schemes of work, assessment documents relating to a pupil s level of attainment, SEN statements, maintenance and inspection reports, or to seek answers to specific questions relating to the plaintiff s statement.

But performance alone does not constitute expertise. Expert miners can identify hazards because they have experienced and observed hazards. They have analyzed the consequences. They can interpret standards and regulations, understand the systems in which they work, assess changes in the environment, and communicate these changes to colleagues and management.

In the definition phase options are narrowed down and a preferred solution is proposed. The project becomes better defined in terms of what should be built and how it should be operated, and an assessment of how the project may be affected by changes beyond the control of the company (for example the oil price) should be made. Normally a clear statement should be prepared, describing why the option is preferred and what project specifications must be met, to be used as a basis for further work.

Assessment variations ranging from 2 to 3 dB are normal, even with well-trained ultrasonic inspectors. With longer work assignments or adverse external influences (cold, heat, dust, noises, etc.) considerably higher variations (12 dB and more) are often observed due to lack of concentration and to tiredness [1].

Quality in NDT depends upon a number of factors. Assessment of NDT laboratory competence is provided through accreditation in compliance with the EN 45000 series standards. 

CTB 941.2-93 defines laboratories subject to accreditation in National system. Among others laboratories with legal status, results of testing and measurements of which are used in assessment of safety of products, works and services, in diagnostics of technical state of critical safety objects and vehicles are noted. These laboratories use different NDT methods in their activities. 

The most subjective of the words which (1 hope) describe this book is interesting. The fascinating behavior of polymers themselves, the clever experiments of laboratory researchers, and the elegant work of the theoreticians add up to an interesting total. 1 have tried to tell about these topics with clarity and enthusiasm, and in such a way as to make them intelligible to students. 1 can only hope that the reader agrees with my assessment of what is interesting. 

In the laboratory or process research section a laboratory procedure for a fine chemical is worked out. The resulting process description provides the necessary data for the determination of preliminary product specifications, the manufacture of semicommercial quantities in the pilot plant, the assessment of the ecological impact, an estimation of the manufacturing cost in an industrial-scale plant, and the vaHdation of the process and determination of raw material specifications. 

Studies on the kinetics of formation of S2F2Q and reviews of appHcable Hterature have been reported (124—126). Other work has concentrated on the use of cell culture evaluation methods for assessing cytotoxic activity of SF decomposition products (127,128). Several laboratories seek to provide methods for accurately determining S2F2Q in operating electrical units (57). 

The economic importance of an ore deposit itself is largely affected by mineral or metal prices. Mine closures and reopenings are a common event in the mineral iadustry for this reason. Economics can also be affected by the ore composition, for example, by unacceptable levels of penalty elements ia the ore. The assessment of overall economics of exploiting a given ore deposit is similar to that for any large-scale industry.
