Rudolf Virchow (1821- 1902) proceeded to replace tissues with cells as the dominant materialist monads of life and disease. According to his cell doctrine, all cells, and hence all life, came from cells No developed tissue can be traced back either to any large or small simple element, unless it be to a cell (quoted from Libby, 1922, p. 267). (The phrase, Omnis cellula e cellula , however, frequently attributed to Virchow, seems to have been first used as an epigraph by Francois Raspail (1794-1878) (Harris, 1999, P- 33)). [Pg.87]

Virchow, who was largely responsible for the acceptance of the cell theory, developed microscopy of cells from normal and diseased tissues as a major tool (histopathology) in the clinical armory. He believed the vital functions of the cell, growth, maintenance, and multiplication were discharged by its nucleus the specialised, distinguishing functions were made possible by the extranuclear constituents. In a Sunday evening lecture in Edinburgh in 1868, On the Physical Basis of Life , Thomas Huxley described cells as protoplasmic masses usually... [Pg.143]

In 1852 Robert Remak explicitely rejected the free-formation idea and concluded that Cells always come from the division of other cells. In 1855 Rudolf Virchow reached the same conclusion by studying a great number of normal and pathological adult tissues, and condensed it with the motto omnis cellula e cellula . The final version of the cell theory is therefore the combination of Schleiden and Schwann s first theory with the conclusion of Remak and Virchow All living creatures are made of cells and of cell products, and cells are always generated by the division of other cells. ... [Pg.12]

For the second route, leukocytes reach the CNS from blood to subarachnoid space. In this pathway, leukocytes travel from the internal carotid artery, across postcapillary venules at the pial surface of the brain into the subarachnoid space and the Virchow-Robin perivascular spaces. There, they might encounter cells of the monocyte/myeloid lineage that are competent for antigen presentation. The perivascular regions, wkere there is direct communication with the CSF compartment, are considered probable sites of lymphocyte-APC interaction and therefore, of immune surveillance of CNS. This pathway is also dependent on P-selecdn. [Pg.21]
