Standard screen printing inks consist of a thick carrier liquid (binder) and finely ground mineral pigments for color, as well as various types of thinner agents to enable the ink to flow and wet to the surface of the substrate. Given the many different materials screen printing interfaces with, there are just as many molecular-ly-different ink formulations to optimize the adhesion of each to these various materials. [Pg.154]

The soft-mud process is used to make handmade btick. Mote water is added to the clay to make a thinner paste, typicaHy about 20 to 30% by weight of water. The resulting slurry is packed into molds that have a sand or water coating on them that acts as a release agent. Seawater muds are composed of bentonite, thinner (lignosulfonate or lignosulfonate and lignite), and an organic filtration control agent. The typical formulation of a seawater mud is 3.5 Ib/bbl of alkali (2 Ib/bbl caustic soda and 1.5 Ib/bbl lime), 8 to 12 Ib/bbl of lignosulfonate, and 2 to 4 Ib/bbl of bentonite to maintain viscosity and filtration. Another approach is to use bentonite/thinner (ligno-sulfonate)/freshwater premix, and mix it with seawater that has been treated for hardness. The majority of phosphate processes in use today are accelerated to obtain shorter treatment times and lower processing temperatures. The most common mode of acceleration is by the addition of oxidising agents such as nitrate, nitrite, chlorate and hydrogen peroxide. By this means, a processing time of 1 to 5 min can be obtained at temperatures of 43-71 °C. The resultant coatings are much smoother and thinner than those from unaccelerated processes, and, while the corrosion resistance is lower, they cause less reduction of paint gloss and are more suited to mass-production requirements. [Pg.709]
