The R s of a fibrous or cellular insulation like those in Table 2 generally decrease as the temperature increases. In the case of closed-cell polymeric foams like polyurethane nr pnlyisncyanurate board, the R may decrease if the insulation temperature drops below the condensation temperature of the blowing agent in the cells. The tank is typically about sixteen inches in diameter and about four to five feet tall. The top of the tank is domed upward and the bottom of the tank is also domed upward in a concave manner. The outside of the tank is insulated with a polyurethane foam insulation that is squirted into the gap between the tank and a thinner sheet metal jacket. The polyurethane is made of two different components that react and harden when mixed. Included in the mixture is a blowing agent that causes the polyurethane to expand in a foam-like manner. Prior to about 1980, water heaters were insulated with fiberglass insulation. The foam insulation process was developed to allow automation and increased manufacturing speed and reduced costs. A side benefit was improved insulating ability leading to a slight increase in efficiency. [Pg.1215]

The forces released when the tank car skin ruptured were quite impressive. Parts of the car were found 250-300 yards (228-274 meters) away from the skin. The wheels of the car were driven into the ground about 2 feet (61 cm) while the wheels were still on the rails. The skin of the car was essentially flattened, with the impressions of the two rails clearly seen through the skin. The sound of the explosion was heard about 10 miles away. The overhead 138,000-volt electrical lines were severed, and the arcs resulted in two small grass fires. Plants connected to these electrical lines were shut down. There was no fire from the polymerization. In addition to the car that was destroyed, nearby cars were also damaged. Foam-like polymer covered an area about 200 by 50 yards (182 by 46 meters). When you pour out a glass of fizzy drink, the frothy part at the top of the drink is a gas/liquid mixture called a foam. The gas, carbon dioxide, has formed tiny bubbles in the liquid but has not dissolved in it. If left to stand, foams like this one collapse as the tiny bubbles join together to form bigger bubbles which then escape. Composition vs. performance. With this product group, little work has been done in this area. A critical literature review on foam rheology is given elsewhere (6). The injection of foam-like dispersions or C02 foams is a useful method in enhanced oil recovery ( 7). The degree of thickening achieved apparently depends to some extent on the properties of the rock itself. Single-cell necrosis Single-cell necrosis (s. pp 400, 545) becomes manifest as the destruction of fatty liver cells and as hyaline necrosis. The latter is either drained haematogenically or removed by stellate cells, which may generate stellate cell nodules. When disposing of fatty liver cells, the stellate cells take in lipoid from the necrotic epithelium and become foam-like. A product that will just not do is the ammonia which can be picked up in the grocery store. This stuff is just 3% ammonia, and is loaded with soap to boot.
