Most solution-cast composite membranes are prepared by a technique pioneered at UOP (35). In this technique, a polymer solution is cast directly onto the microporous support film. The support film must be clean, defect-free, and very finely microporous, to prevent penetration of the coating solution into the pores. If these conditions are met, the support can be coated with a Hquid layer 50—100 p.m thick, which after evaporation leaves a thin permselective film, 0.5—2 pm thick. This technique was used to form the Monsanto Prism gas separation membranes (6) and at Membrane Technology and Research to form pervaporation and organic vapor—air separation membranes (36,37) (Fig. 16). [Pg.68]

EP adhesives come as fabric- or glass-supported films, pastes, and viscous liquids [208,212]. They are often supplied in solvent. The use of coatings applied in the form of tape is also increasing. Compounds crystallized directly onto the carbon grid or with a defined orientation, due to other preparation methods, normally exhibit a suitable initial zone close to 0°. Samples from insoluble compounds are almost statistically oriented only biased by the particle shape. In this case, it is difficult to find a single crystalline part of appropriate thickness oriented with a suitable zone parallel to the surface. Depending on purposes, a plastic film under the vapor-deposited C is dissolved away with a solvent. By this method, a very thin C support-film of smaller than lOnm in thickness can be made easily. An aluminum (Al) support-film can be made similarly, by vapor-deposition of Al onto a plastic film put on a grid and then by dissolving away the plastic film.
