Blood thinners

Hydrophobic polymer materials that slowly release N O can be used on the surface of medical devices. Many medical devices suffer from the surface adhesion of blood platelets. To minimize this thrombogenic effect, blood thinners such as heparin, coumarin, and aspirin are often used. However, systemic administration of antiplatelet agents could increase the risk of uncontrolled bleeding elsewhere in the body. In contrast, biocompatible polymer films would solve this problem [153]. It is possible to create polymeric surfaces that mimic the inner surface of a blood vessel by... [Pg.24]

Aspirin s original use as an analgesic, antipyretic, and to reduce inflammation continues to this day, and more recently some evidence has been found that it may lessen the chance of heart attacks due to its effect as a blood thinner. Just as aspirin continues to provide the same benefits as a century ago, it also produces some of the same problems. The major problem is that it can upset the stomach. In the acidic environment of the stomach, aspirin can diffuse through the protective mucous lining of the stomach and rupture cells and produce bleeding. Under normal doses, the amount of blood loss in most individuals is only a milliliter or two, but in some individuals who take heavy doses bleeding can be severe. To counterattack this side effect, manufacturers include an antacid such as aluminum hydroxide and call the aspirin a buffered aspirin. As noted previ-... [Pg.168]

Dennis Quaid, a successful film actor and advocate for drug safety. His 12-day-old twins accidentally received a dosage of the blood thinner Heparin that was 1,000 times stronger than normal for infants. Aspirin is considered a relatively safe medication, but it does have some potentially dangerous side effects, especially when taken in amounts that exceed the recommended dosage or when taken for a prolonged period of time (i.e., weeks or months). Such side effects include tinnitus (ringing in the ears), upset stomach and stomach ulcers, liver or kidney problems, and high blood pressure. Aspirin also reduces the blood s ability to form clots for this reason, aspirin is considered a blood thinner. This reduced blood clotting can result in bleeding from the stomach or intestines. [Pg.26]

Vitamin K, menadione, Q 1 Hx02 (Figure 6.10), which is found in spinach and cabbage and a wide range of other foods and acts as a blood clotter. Warfrin, sometimes administered as a blood thinner , works by disrupting the activity of vitamin K. Vitamin K is also mostly produced by intestinal bacteria. There are some variations of the structure for four similar vitamin K molecules all based upon the structure shown. [Pg.93]

Warfarin is sometimes prescribed as a blood thinner because it is an effective vitamin K antagonist. Warfarin is also used as a rat poison, causing death by lethal (internal) bleeding. [Pg.175]

The patient was getting worse on drug therapy (blood thinners and cortisone), so it was elected to start her on H202 infused into the large arteries of the neck, the carotids. It was hoped that the oxygen released by the H202 would reach those tiny lifelines encased deep in bone and muscle—the vertebrals. [Pg.29]

Based on the finding that NDGA is an antioxidant, chaparral has been promoted as an anticancer agent (Tyler, 1993). In a recent review (Sheikh, 1997) of chaparral-associated hepatotoxicity, patients reported using chaparral as a general cleansing tonic, internal skin cleanser, blood thinner, arthritis remedy, antiasthmatic, nutritional supplement, and weight loss product. [Pg.239]

Care needs to be taken when combining naproxen with other medications. Known adverse drug interactions can occur with aspirin, methotrexate, ACE inhibitors (for high blood pressure), furosemide, lithium, and warfarin (a blood thinner). An overdose of naproxen may cause dizziness, drowsiness, and gastrointestinal problems. High blood pressure, kidney failure, and coma may occur, but are rare. [Pg.480]

Penicillin may alter the results of some medical tests, such as those for the presence of sugar in the urine. Penicillin can also interact with a number of other medications, including blood thinners, thyroid drugs, blood pressure drugs, birth control pills, and other antibiotics, in some cases decreasing their effectiveness. [Pg.538]
